So I used a BTHH5A for some time, but for my 50/10 VDSL2 link the router part was already feeling a bit slow (I use the SQM traffic shaper), so I configured it to act as bridged modem (still running OpenWrt) and hooked it up to a better router (also running OpenWrt). So if you get an HH5A you can always convert it to a "dumb modem" if you want/need to. But for an HH5A have a look at https://openwrt.org/toh/bt/homehub_v5a and especially @bill888 's excellent instructions at https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=266

ok, and one last question. would this work with the GLAR150 out the box? from the sounds of things it sounds like you just plug straight into it? it also uses pppoa

Who is your ISP ?

If you are in the UK, some ADSL ISPs support both PPPoE and PPPoA.

I don't own one myself but understand the Vigor 120 is one of very few modems which is capable of doing PPPoA to PPPoE conversion. Quick google suggests:

1. ENABLE the PPPoE/PPPoA client.
2. CHECK the 'PPPoE Pass through for Wired LAN'.
3. Protocol *MUST* be set to PPPoA... it will NOT work with PPPoE

Then configure external router to use PPPoE to athenticate.

Good luck.

Listen to @bill888, please, as he is an expert regarding DSL internet in the UK. But the bulb for the vigor 120 sounds like it should work, but I would first research whether your ISP actually strictly requires PPPoA or will also work with PPPoE (since that should open the choice of modem considerably).

from what my isp (greenisp) has told me, i believe it is pppoa only as they were the only set up settings that they sent me with no mention of pppoe I think it makes more sense for me to get the BT router as i don't need a faster connection and it is a fair bit cheaper. Thanks for all the info and it will most certainly be helpful in the future!
