SQM QoS limiting PS4 games console but nothing else

I've recently noticed my PS4's downloads were very slow, slow as 4MB/s. I decided to disable luci-app-qsm and I get 35MB/s. On the subject of disabling luci-app-sqm, it's not just a simple case of unchecking the box as sadly the PS4 is still limited to 4MB/s. It's not until I go to 'System > Startup' and click the 'Stop' button next to 'sqm' when I regain my 35MB/s again.

Now I have VLANs setup on my router with SQM enabled on the WAN VLAN (eth1.10). In the past this has never been a problem, but currently each time my router is rebooted I'm having to disable and re-enable SQM for it to work.

With the below config in place by internet download speeds are dropped to about 285Mb/s and 45Mb/s upload and this works perfectly on my PC and phone. On the other hand the PS4 seems to be limited.

When you apply your SQM do you get any errors in your "System Log?"
Also from your network config you have A LOT of things that could possibly be affecting your speeds.
Have you tried simply plugging it into another port or changing wires?

Your switch configuration makes no sense. It looks like the modem is port 4, but you should not be sending anything other than the WAN to it. A VLAN that only has one port in the list is like a road with one house. It can't switch anything.

The WAN port is port 4. It is a VLAN trunk that goes to a another managed switch which splits the WAN and two LANs I have.

To be honest I think I'm going to compile my own firmware back on the master trunk as 19.07.3 has been problematic so far.

Okay I'm now running back on v19.07.3 rather than master and there is definitely a problem with SQM QoS and my PS4. I've tried different port on the router and different cables and no difference. My PC and laptop are using the same cables and ports and they still achieve full speeds through WAN speed tests. Disabling SQM QoS brings the PS4's speed tests close to my true WAN speeds and PS4 downloads/updates are completing in no time as they should.

Mmmh, with pppoe, pppoe-wan is the canonical place to instantiate SQM, as otherwise SQM will not notice PPPoE reconnections at all...

Could you please post the output of:
tc -s qdisc
from before a PS4 download and the same tc -s qdisc output immediately after the download? Ideally with checking and confirming that the PS4 still only achieves low throughput.

Also could you post a sketch of your network topology, I am wondering whether the PS4 might be connected such that its download traffic traverses the egress side of eth1.10?

N.B I rebooted the router this morning after an up time of 10 days or so and the PS4 was downloading at full speeds with SQM enabled on eth1.10. It seems to drop speeds on the PS4 later on in the day after it has been on for a few hours.

Mmmh, I note no shaper instance active for the upload direction... and no overhead settings...
Also this single instance is not fully aligned with your posted /etc/config/sqm, as instead of besteffort layer_cake defaults to diffserv4. So something is fishy here.

Could you please post the output of:
SQM_VERBOSITY_MAX=10 /etc/init.d/sqm stop ; SQM_VERBOSITY_MAX=10 /etc/init.d/sqm start
run from a ssh-session on the router, to get a better idea where things go off-script?

That seems to turn SQM into less of a suspect and more of an innocent bystander... But try switching to fq_codel/simple.qos to see whether cake might still be involved...

Yes, but this now is piece_of_cake.qos, so the /etc/config/sqm higher up in the thread is not relevant anymore, could you post the current output of /etc/config/sqm please? Just to check whether everything comes up as expected...

There is really nothing indicating that cake/sqm noticed any latency/bandwidth issue at all. But that only means that SQM is not conscious of there being an issue and is no proof of no issue

Time to figure out more details... what ISP & what plan are you using and could you post a a dslreports speedtest from the PS4 (does that even have a browser?)

When the PS4 goes slow, does issueing the following on the command line get you back to speed?
/etc/init.d/sqm stop ; /etc/init.d/sqm start

I think I've found the culprit. I went through some of the services under System > Startup under LuCI and disabled and stopped some of the non-important services, ran /etc/init.d/sqm stop ; /etc/init.d/sqm start and then tested the PS4's internet speedtest till it jumped back up from 40Mbps to 200Mbps.

The culprit is nft-qos. I have already officially reported this bug regarding when it is enabled but no devices are in the list, it still applies the limits anyway.
