SQM not seeming to work

Hello,

I am trying to get SQM working on my Linksys MX4300. I have T-mobile Home Internet. After running a speed test I set the Download speed (ingress) to 80000 and the upload to 5000. Very low compared to the speed test results because I know there will be fluctuation and I am OK running slower, at least to start.

My issue is that SQM does not appear to be making any difference. Download and Upload speeds remain the same, along with the same latency. Should the Download and Upload not cap to the 80000 and 5000 I set? I can not figure out why it won’t limit or provide bandwidth management.

No sign of any traffic shaper (htb, tbf or cake) in the tc output, so sqm is not actually running explaining your measurements. The next question to tackle is why? I will post later when I am at a computer how to further diagnose this...

Please try:

Mmmh, but I bet tc -s qdisc will not show a single cake instance...
Could you please post the output of:

to see whether immediately after sqm-scripts runs we see some cake instances...

Hmm, I guess there might be offloading?

Under Firewall "Flow offloading type" is set to "None"

However, I am running on an Linksys LN1301/MX4300 with no official support, yet. A community build I found was created by someone named qosmio. According to the reddit page I found it on.
"qosmio has developed a version with NSS, which offloads the network processing from the CPUs onto qualcomm proprietary cores."

I know this is a silly question, but are you sure that your speedtest runs via that router? and not e.g. via a WiFi or WiFi mesh link to the T-mobile Home Internet modem/router? (I assume that is fixed wireless access and not fiber)?

Correct, it is not fiber, it is cellular internet.

This machine is not connect to any WiFi network it has an Ethernet cable directly to the router. The Router is plugged into the T-mobile cellular Gateway.

The Gateway is a Arcadyan KVD21.

This is still odd, tc reports operational cake instances that actually see traffic (according to the counters), yet the capacity test results are way above the shaper rates... either the shaper misbehaves or the traffic does flow around the shaper somehow...

Could you do me a favor and:
0) configure the netflix capacity test under https://fast.com like this:


save that configuration for that device but keep the browser open

  1. restart the router (so we start from a clean slate with low counters)
  2. collect the output of:

  3. run a capacity test (and capture the final result page in a screenshot, we really want to see the counters of traffic in both directions):

post the information for 2-4 to this thread. This should allow us to see over which interfaces the traffic passed.

Please try to keep the cross-traffic from other devices low during the measurement, so we get cleaner easier to interpret numbers...

Yes, I can look into doing this. Unfortunately it will most likely be tomorrow when I can.

This is probably a large part of your problem, anything offloaded (NSS) is out of sight of the kernel.
