Sophos XGS 3300 - "Switch" not working

Hello forum,
I have two Sophos XGS 3300 firewalls in front of me right now.
At first I tried to install OPNsense to use a full firewall with a better OS.
After the installation I realized that the RJ45 and SFP ports are without function.
When I asked in the forum, I was advised to try OpenWrt because OPNsense does not support a switch port.

The hardware:
At the front I have an MGMT port which has a dedicated Intel chip.
Next to it there are 4 SFP ports (2x 1G + 2x 10G) and 8 RJ45 ports with 1G each.
The ports are apparently connected internally to a switch chip.
I was able to install OpenWrt by flashing the current 23.05 version onto the installed M2 SSD.
Booting worked without any problems.
Only the MGMT port appears.
All other ports remain offline.

Just for fun I installed all the Marvell and Broadcom packages that are available via the repo.
Unfortunately it didn't work.

Can anyone tell me how to reactivate the ports?

The USB ports work.
If I install the driver for a LAN USB adapter, I can use it as a WAN port and the MGMT port as a LAN port, for example.

Funny info:
The firewall has 2 DDR4 RAM sticks with 8GB each.
These are also seen by the OS.
There is also a 4GB DDR4-S0 bar.
But it is not recognized. No idea what it does.

lspci does not exist in OpenWrt.
I have sent you other information commands and inserted the output here.
With OpenWrt, OPNsense and even with a simple Debian it does not show me the remaining network ports.
I can't find the switch chip either.
No idea which driver is missing.

And yes, the hardware works. It is not broken :wink:

Looks like it uses an Octeon chip to handle a lot of the network interfaces. Most likely something custom developed by Sophos that does not exist in mainline linux.

With the data sheet, the 4GB RAM stick is starting to make sense.
There is a second system installed.

I would say it is unlikely to get this to work in OpenWrt. As far as I understand there is a whole network processor embedded in the x86-64 machine. The embedded octeon tx processor has an openwrt target available:

However you would also need to figure out how the x86-64 machine talks to the network processor which would probably need some custom driver.

I'm no embedded hardware expert but I think it would require the development of a driver and getting the network processor to work as well.

I had hoped that I could install OpenWrt or OPNsense on the device as easily as on the XG 330.
There is only Intel hardware installed, which was recognized without any problems.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get a better OS than SophosOS on the device, please let me know! :slight_smile:

Unfortunately, this will be a recurring theme from here on forward. It used to be that ethernet ports on x86 firewall/"UTM" appliances were straightforward and switchless, "just a number of ports". But recently, vendors have been moring towards switches and even custom/bespoke/exotic network hardware, presumably to offload the increased throughput/analysis requirements from the CPU. With Sophos I have seen it starting with the XGS 136, but also with Saxa (starting with the SS5000) and TrendMicro (starting with the Cloud Edge G2 series).
