[SOLVED] What is the best implementation, 23.05 or 18.06

I’m running OpenWrt on a Pi4. The LAN port is feeding a TP-Link TL-WR740N 150Mbps WiFi Router. The Pi4B is handling my VPN service. So this gives me a WiFi access and 4 Ethernet ports that goes through the VPN. A handy setup for me.
It is possible to install OpenWrt version 18.06 only directly on the TP-Link router, for 23.05 would not be compatible according to the Table of Hardware.
The Question : Which configuration is most advantageous
A) OpenWrt ver.23.05 on Pi4 and TP-Link TL-WR740N
or
B) OpenWrt ver.18.06 directly on TP-Link TL-WR740N
Would there be a major advantage for solution A .vs. B ?
Considering the advantage for Solution B would then free my Pi4 for other projects.
Thanks

Possible: yes. Advisable: no. 18.06 is half a decade old, not maintained anymore, and should be considered insecure. Running it on an internal device (a Wifi access point, or a print server, or something along those lines) may be okay but It really, really should not be used on an edge router anymore.

I've built an updated 19.07 for AP only usage (your case) from a maintained fork (librecmc) - I suggest to use it [19.07 ath79 final] Librecmc for 4/32 tiny devices
but you should really upgrade your wifi AP asap - I think a 16/128 device can be had for as low as 10$ used nowadays

The Pi is excellent and will outperform anything but an x86.

Your AP needs updated WPA2 and should have WPA3. Spend accordingly.
