Some people want to redirect all their traffic to the VPN others just want to send only traffic destined for the LAN behind the VPN server.
I am no windows expert, but it sounds like you cannot access the shares due to some windows restriction. Can you ping the host that has the samba shares when you connect without the 0/0 option?

Yes, I can.
Per this post, I checked the virtual adapter. There's no "IPv4 Default Gateway" listed when I remove the route command.
Which is normal.
So I believe all is set for your L2 VPN from the Openwrt perspective.
