changing comp-lzo no to comp-lzo yes (to remove the Bad compression stub decompression header byte: 102 error I noticed in the OpenVPN log in the client).

I didn't notice that, but in general settings in both server and client must match.

I've used the route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 trick so many times now that I've completely forgotten why it was necessary in the first place. Any ideas?

It is directing all traffic from the client to go through the tunnel.
Are the network shares inside 192.168.31.X or somewhere else?
