With serial you could try installing the TL-WDR7500 v3 or the C7 v1 build. Both of those are for 8M flash.

There's not a lot of developer interest in these special versions for the Chinese domestic market, especially when TP-Link put smaller memory chips in them.

• This device is currently not supported by OpenWrt
• There are no OpenWrt images available for download

Therefore the linked page answers your question regarding possibilities to install current release OpenWrt on this router. Short answer: No.

Of course, you can try with a different image as mk24 suggested, but with no guarantees that it will 100% work, or that it will work at all.
If you want OpenWrt on this device, you have to pioneer and make it work.
