[Solved] How to enter the configuration after an upgrade

When I upgrade OpenWRT on my router from an old version using sysupgrade, I will also reset the configuration. After performing this upgrade and reset of the configuration, do I have to manually enter all my configuration settings again in Luci or can I just reload a configuration backup file that I made with the old version?

Depends how old the old version was.

@frollic Thanks for your quick answer. Only it doesn't help me understand what I need to do. Can you please let me know what you mean with "Depends how old the old version was."?

= from which, to which version are you upgrading?

Is it s major, or minor version upgrade?

I have a few routers with different versions. So it varies. But can you please let me know what is the answer in general? Is it the same answer as for the sysupgrade where you can keep the settings with only up to one mayor version upgrade? So if the upgrade is more than one mayor version higher than the old version, then I need to enter all settings manually again in Luci?

Yes. But in some cases, even one major version upgrade requires reconfiguration (mainly if the device has transitioned from swconfig to dsa). Minor upgrades (point releases) can always be upgraded with settings preserved or via restoring a backup.

@ psherman Thanks for the clear answer.

You’re welcome.
