[Solved] Cheap, simple home WiFi AP?

Hi,

I have a spare Nano R4S with OpenWRT installed and wanted to hand it down to my partner to hang infront of their modem. All I really need is something-something WiFi that's "future" proof.

The network topology is simple:

[ Modem (250mbit/s ] <-WAN-> [Nano R4S] <-LAN-> [ WiFi AP ]

Behind that Wifi are:

  • 2-3 consumer devices
  • a smart TV
  • two PCs (homeoffice and private use)

I'm looking for a device that is:

  • at least WiFi 5
  • does not have dumb management apps if possible (neither does any cloud or remote access matter)
  • possibly not PoE (it's a home network, there are no PoE devices in use currently)
  • optionally has a pass-through LAN port, if the home PC ever decides to go wired (but again, entirely optional)

OpenWRT on the AP is optional, it just needs to be configurable, wifi congestion and signal strength is not high on the list, the place is small-ish, the AP is in the center of all rooms.

Sourcing region is EU.

Can't seem to source that one in Europe.

ZyXEL WSM20 (Multy M1) https://openwrt.org/toh/zyxel/wsm20

+1 for the WSM20, esp you buy a multi pack.

DAP-X1860 if you skip the additional ethernet ports.

I think that fits the bill very well. Extremely cheap, if there's a necessity of LAN deployment, I'll throw an unmanaged switch into the mix eventually.

Thanks everyone!

any new or 2nd hands MT7621 based router, under us$20.

likes Xiaomi 4A gigabit.

Xiaomi is a gamble, since they swap the flash chip, and people soft brick their devices.

get the year 2022 or before, very good.

You know web sites don't post the manufacturing date for products, right?

If they did, you still won't know if the info's accurate.

4A Gigabit is a very good device indeed for the price with 2 notes:

  • Wave1 WiFi 5 (this is not really fitting the "future" proof requirement but serving OPs desired devices would be without issues especially on 250Mbps)
  • 16 MB internal memory - might be a limiting factor in the future for openwrt if you plan on adding additional programs (without programs it is no trouble).

Still, if OP decides to try it out, lt me share that the router is really good for that money (should be available for under 30 euros). Good signal, compact, elegant, enough eth ports plus it runs in harsher environment without a trouble (in a climate where is 30*C+ for a few months and humid, works fine). SQM is possible.

Factory firmware is really easy to use and navigate too!

Another one available in EU would be Xiaomi AX3200 which is considerably more powerful than 4A but also close to 60 euros (i have checked on amazon.de, unsure if that helps).

if you're ok with playing the flash chip lottery, you might as well buy a MR70X, price should be about the same, wifi thoughput higher.

Interesting however it looks like for ~50% more money you dont get not much more except some WiFi upgrades.

Also, i believe sku numbers for Xiaomi 4A Giga can be compared? Not ideal but at least some hope for tracking the model supported by openwrt

I rest my case Support for Xiaomi 4A gigabit motherboard MB02EU

Costs more - but the value is in its reliability and ease of use.

Plus it supports full on bufferbloat

plus pretty much impossible to find in EU
