I have almost completed my local network and the only thing left is the router, and obviously the choice fell on OpenWRT!
I found a Fujitsu S920 with a 4 ethernet NIC at a bargain price as I want to replace my current router (Vodafone Power Station) but I completely forgot (stupid me) that I only have the DSL port to get internet.
I want to change the router as it can't seem to cope with all the traffic I send through it (I try to host various services including Wireguard, SearXNG, Tor node, Monero node, I2P node etc...) so I've gone for a quad-core x86 processor.
The problem now is: invest in a NIC with a DSL port and a Wi-Fi repeater or buy a router with everything you need (powerful enough not to reboot for overload?) such as the FRITZ! BOX 7530 AX (or other advice is also welcome!).
The second solution is certainly the most convenient and I would convert the Fujitsu into a local media-server with 2TB SSD, but I wonder if it is actually feasible, can anyone give me feedback?
I would do neither: Can you switch your Vodafone Power Station into bridge mode? That way, it only serves as a DSL modem and all routing tasks can be handled via your Ethernet-connected Fujitsu.
I think I can, but I'm not sure on how to do it right now (I will do some research on that).
But wouldn't this way of operation still have the "overload reboot" problem?
Also my bad for the 7530 AX, only the 7530 is supported.
I'm not familiar with this device so I don't know what you're referring to. However, acting as a pure DSL modem puts much less pressure on the CPU of the device and it should be more stable for a longer period of time.
The current problem is that my Vodafone Power Station reboot randomly if I try to put all my traffic through it (Tor node, Monero node, I2P node etc...).
Last thing I wanna ask is: do you have experience with DSL modems? Any suggestion or should I just try to pick up a cheap one? (I would like to keep my current Vodafone Station untouched since by contract is on loan for use)
My ISP clearly allows switching their device to bridge mode - it's a simple menu setting.
That said, I replaced it with a Fritz 7520 that I also use as router. Depending on your contract, this may or may not work, i.e. it is somewhat limited in its (speed) capabilities.
Sometimes power supplies are inadequate or die slowly. Under load devices needs more juice and that might result in too low voltage and a hang or reboot. Any chance you have a spare power supply with the same voltage and equal or higher amperage to try out? Also why not ask your ISP about the reboot problem?
You don't know it is too little power but even if it is using bridge mode will cut the power required at least 30% and high traffic will rase that only slightly.
I never asked my ISP because on the router there is the possibility to see logs and whenever I activate all my services the CPU (and RAM) skyrocket at 100% and the router crashes.
I'm trying to retrieve the logs (that of course don't last more than a couple of days...) but no simple option to switch to bridge mode, here in Italy ISPs are known to be a pain in the ass...
Probably a stupid question but I'll still try:
couldn't I just buy a DSL to Ethernet adapter and use the Fujitsu as router? I saw that in other to use a custom router with Vodafone I have to modify some settings but they seems pretty harmless:
I thought so... I've found this but it seems like something impossible (I don't even know if at a technical level is possible to just convert the signal...).
Worst thing is that I read the thread you shared and I agree with the guy, at this point I think I prefer getting a good DSL router and using the Fujitsu as media server, without having a bridge one. Problem is that they are expensive and I don't know which one is good
