This is a continuation of a previous topic that was marked as solved but still having issues.
I have a raspberry pi 4 that's running openwrt (23.05.5) for the purpose of running a WG VPN to connect to home from out side.
I have the WG setup and when I'm connected to the VPN from an android or laptop (via wifi or ethernet) client while on wireless at "house B" I get ~180/170 mbps. My "house A" (where I have the Rp4 with wg running behind a primary router) speed is 200/200 mbps.
The weird thing is that if I connect to the WG VPN from same android device/laptop but this time while I am in my "house A" wifi, my speed drops to ~21/55 mbps. If I disconnect from the VPN while in the "house A" then I get the advertised speed.
I have tried lowering the mtu several times to as low as 1200 but that didn't change the issue.
Anyone know what could be leading to this issue? At times I connect to the VPN while at "house A" for testing purposes.
No. The router/wifi AP is a Google Nest Wifi Pro. I made the switch two days ago from a Verizon Fior router/AP to see if that was the issue.
No, the only purpose of the RP4 running openwrt with WG VPN server on it to connect to HOUSE A while I am away. I used HOUSE B due to the fact that while I am home (HOUSE C IN TORONTO) I get poor speeds while connecting to the WG VPN. I used HOUSE B (my sister's house as a test) and got the ~180/170 mbps while connected to WG VPN as a peer on the S24.
I have several different peer config sfor different devices (S24, two Chromecast with google tv, two computers).
The original topic explained things a little further. While I am at house A, I am trying to figure out why it slows down from my place to well below what other users have been able to get out of a WG server on a RP4. This is the first time I am at HOUSE A in a while so it is the first time I found out that while I am connected to the WG while inside the HOUSE A (so connected to the AP wifi) the slow speeds happen similar to while I am at HOUSE C. While in HOUSE B it was the first time I was able to get
OK that's new...I'll take some time to review. Because I'm still lost why you're in house A - testing house A (and what exactly it is you're testing to get ~21/55 Mbps speed from it). It seems you're purposely making some loop, but I'll (hopefully) see in the organal thread...
Lastly I wasn't sure if you were saying this is good or bad.
For me that would be good because that is close enough to my isp 200/200 speed at my HOUSE C in Toronto.
Sorry for the confusion. I am at HOUSE A (my parent's house) only for 2 days. I got the 180/170 speed while at HOUSE B (my sister's).
My original topic that's linked was created because I was getting no where near the speeds that other users have been able to get while running a similar configuration as mine, i.e. > 200/200 mpbs while running wg server on a Rp4. Hopefully that explains things a little better.
Does creating a loop as you mentioned above slow down the speeds?
Are you saying you have the exact same setup in Houses A and B?
It's still not clear what "test" produced the ~21/55 Mbps result (I assume the yellow line "test" only at House A)
Your picture doesn't show the Internet (and you told me the OpenWrt was only WG)?
But your picture shows a Samsung S24 connected to the OpenWrt - this could cause your issue
You also mention and show a switch, but given we cannot see the Interent depicted, it's difficult to determine it's purpose or why you think it's the possible solution to an issue
I'm sure that all this information is clearer in the first thread, so I'll need to understand it all after I have an opportunity to review it. I'll take time to review.
House A: Ont fiber line (Internet) - - >Google nest wifi pro (two nodes that create a mesh) --> switch (several devices to connect to the nest wifi pro [one of which is the RP4]).....I connected to WG a a peer to test the speed and to see if the WG was working. I do something similar when I am home (HOUSE C) and get 200/200 speed while I am connected ed to my home WG at house C.
House B: Ont fiber line (Internet) - - > TP Link router - - - > SWITCH has several AP connected to. While at house B, I connect to WG as a peer to connect to WG at house A. That's when I got the 180/170 speed.
House C: Internet - - > RP4 (main router) - - >Switch - - > TP link router running openwrt. I have a separate WG severe in the house C. Hopefully that doesn't confuse things even further. I am only mentioning because I do the same thing when testing i am testing if the WG at my house c is working. When doing this I get 200/200.
So I thought that I could do the same thing on house A as I do on house C. But when I do that's when I get the slow speeds.
Original thread was created because when I connected to WG as peer to HOUSE A while I'm at my own HOUSE C, I would get less than 40 down and greater than 150 up.
I was going to restart from scratch with the openwrt install and the WG install at house A but then I decided to connect to the WG while I was at my sister's (house B) and that's when I got the 170/180 speed.
Yes, I route the internet the peer and test speed through fast.com or nperf.com or wifi an app.
I do the same when testing from either of the three houses.
Yes that is correct. It is hard wired to the main nest pro that acts like the router. That main nest router is hard wired to the internet coming from fios isp.the main router has to ethernet ports (1 to connect to the internet and the other is connected to a 8 port unmanaged switch; RP4 in house a is hard wired to the same switch).
Previously I did not have the mesh but only a fios router that was provided by the isp (it hard 4 ethernet ports and I connected the Rp4 hardwired to it).. I put the nest wifi pro a couple days ago to see if anything would change. Unfortunately, the same issues kept happening.
