[Share] OpenWrt 25.12 Dave's Guitar Dave Täht Digital Archive Museum

April 1, 2026, marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of Dave Täht.
This post is dedicated to Dave Täht, LibreQoS, OpenWrt, and every OpenWrt enthusiast.
It is also dedicated to the newly released OpenWrt 25.12 "Dave's Guitar".

Because of you, the open-source universe and OpenWrt continue to shine.

To Mayday, all the Mayday fans (五迷), and every OpenWrt enthusiast:

Hello everyone. I am a Mayday fan born in the exact same year the band was formed.
I am also an ordinary Open Source enthusiast from Taiwan — TW641 (Taiwan641).

In a few days, it will be April 1st, April Fool's Day.
To many, this might just be a day for practical jokes.
But for the internet community, it is a sentimental moment.
We are about to mark the one-year anniversary of the passing of a highly respected pioneer, Dave Täht.

With a craftsman's spirit, he dedicated his life to fighting Bufferbloat.
He selflessly contributed his time to solve global network latency issues.
His work allows countless users worldwide to enjoy a smoother and more reliable internet.

To honor his profound impact on the networking community, the latest stable release of the open-source router firmware, OpenWrt 25.12, was officially released on March 5, 2026.
It was specifically named "Dave's Guitar", dedicating this glory to him in the starry sky.

This spirit particularly reminds me of the song "Fool" (《憨人》) by the Taiwanese band Mayday.
I truly believe this song perfectly summarizes Dave's entire life.
Every word, every note, sings of him!

Lead singer Ashin once wrote in a 2020 anniversary post:
The Chinese character for fool, "憨", is actually made of "敢" (Courage) over "心" (Heart).

 > 憨 = 敢 + 心
 > Fool = Courage + Heart

He was exactly like this "fool". He relied on that pure courage at the bottom of his heart to dedicate his whole life to the open-source spirit.
Even if the path was lonely, the blood, sweat, and legacy he left behind have deeply influenced countless people in this world.

Speaking of which, it's a fascinating twist of fate.
During their predecessor "So Band" era, Mayday officially formed and changed to their current name on March 29, 1997.
In just ten days, it will be Mayday's 29th anniversary.
And I was born exactly a few days after their formation (April 10, 1997).

Perhaps it is this romantic resonance of being the exact same age as Mayday that made me decide to build this digital museum for Dave.
When you open the webpage, the grand title immediately catches your eye.

To perfectly adapt to different stargazing perspectives, I designed two layouts. I poured my craftsman's soul into meticulously polishing the visual details:

If you view it on a computer screen, the title expands broadly like a galaxy:

 > 🇹🇼 TW641 Padavan CAKE 🍰
 > OpenWrt 25.12 Dave's Guitar 🎸
 > 開源路由器韌體 與 Dave Täht 數位典藏博物館 🏛️

If you open it on a mobile phone, it gently wraps like star trails:

 > 🇹🇼 TW641 Padavan CAKE 🍰
 > OpenWrt 25.12 Dave's Guitar 🎸
 > 開源路由器韌體 與 Dave Täht
 > 數位典藏博物館 🏛️

Digital Museum Main URL: https://tw641.github.io/
(Backup URL: https://tw641.pages.dev/ )

The project codename for this digital museum is "Tribute Time Machine".

While meticulously crafting this code and polishing every detail, Mayday's songs were looping endlessly in my ears.
To make everything more perfect, I deeply embedded an exclusive Mayday playlist into the source code of this website.
I also integrated interactive design philosophies about life and the starry sky.

Every hidden detail tells a story:

[ Visual Design of the Starry Universe ]
Dave's family name "Täht" means "Star" in Estonian.
This beautiful coincidence runs through the entire universe design philosophy of the museum.
To materialize this spirit, I breathed life into the hex color codes:
The deep cosmic edge (#5374fa), the hovering warm starlight (#fd9179), and the high-energy supernova core (#ff6969) intertwine to form this boundless open-source universe.
In the deep Night Sky Mode (#05050a), the brightest azure star (#58a6ff) represents Dave.
Meanwhile, in the vast Daylight Mode (#f6f8fa), every "You" (#0550ae) looking up at the stars becomes an indispensable stargazer in this universe.

[ Interactive Guide for Stargazers ]
If you ever get lost in this digital universe, a gentle interactive guide is hidden deep within the museum:
When you are looking for Dave Täht, please look at the brightest star in the night sky!
When you ask me why Dave is so dazzling? I will answer:

"The darker the night, the brighter the Täht."

When you miss him, please enter this command in the terminal: "modprobe sch_cake"
These little-known stories are quietly waiting for you to discover.

[ Breathing Stars ]
Dave himself is breathing and shining every single moment.
I set the standard human breathing rate to 4.0 seconds.
When you hover your mouse over it, or click the glowing blue text on your phone, he will twinkle at a 1.0-second frequency, passionately saying hello to you!

[ The Time Machine's Accelerator ]
Those seemingly ordinary blue hyperlinks and gradient dynamic fonts on the webpage...
Once you hover your mouse over them, you board the tribute time machine.
The dynamic nebula will accelerate from 4.1 seconds to 2.5 seconds. It takes you back to the year 2025, allowing us to honor those untold true stories together!

[ The Nebula Light Strip and Secret Easter Egg at the Bottom ]
When you move your mouse away, the light strip returns to its purest form.
In the second stage, it emits a dazzling light simply because "You" are riding this time machine and witnessing this history together!
The third stage is triggered by clicking anywhere on the webpage, witnessing Dave's reunion with his family.
But only when you scroll to the very bottom of this museum will you see this supernova explosion of convergence, along with this quietly flowing dynamic nebula secret.

To perfectly present the beauty of this Easter Egg, I prepared two dedicated viewing angles for dual devices:

If you view it on a computer screen, it flows perfectly centered:

 > ⭐ Dave Täht passed away on 2025.04.01. Today is 2026.03.19.
 > 🌠 Illuminating the open-source universe for 352 days (11個月(M) 18天(D)).
 > © 2026 TW641. Built with passion for a Bufferbloat-free world.

If you open it on a mobile phone, it gently wraps like star trails:

 > ⭐ Dave Täht passed away on 2025.04.01.
 > Today is 2026.03.19.
 > 🌠 Illuminating the open-source universe for 352 days
 > (11個月(M) 18天(D)).
 > © 2026 TW641. Built with passion for a Bufferbloat-free world.

[ Metaphor of Life and the Starry Sky ]

 > In life, they were Stars illuminating the world.
 > In death, they are Starstuff illuminating the universe.
 >
 > (在世時,他們是照亮世界的星星。)
 > (逝世後,他們是點亮宇宙的星塵。)

These two sentences perfectly contrast Star and Starstuff, symbolizing his reunion with his parents in the starry sky, converging into eternity.

[ Curator's Code TW641 ]
TW represents my hometown, Taiwan.
6 represents the 6 selected tracks in the Starry Sky Playlist.
4 and 1 are the day he left, perfectly echoing the noble mission of selfless dedication in the song "Fool".

[ Starry Sky Playlist ]
Listen to "Fool" (憨人), to hear the story of his selfless dedication.
Listen to "Time Machine" (時光機), to power up this tribute machine.
Listen to "What If We Had Never Met" (如果我們不曾相遇), to commemorate the chance encounter with him.
Listen to "Starry Sky" (星空), to accompany our loneliness in the dark universe.
Listen to "Meteor Rain" (流星雨), to make a wish in this digital universe.
Listen to "Because of You" (因為你 所以我), to bless each other during hard times:
"Building a universe with the smallest memories."

Finally, the original intention of all this comes from a single quote:

“If you don’t make it beautiful, it’s for sure doomed”

This Tribute Time Machine is our beautiful product.

 > Built to survive.
 > Built to remember.

Even an ordinary person who doesn't understand code at all can definitely feel this romance!
Just open the museum URL on your computer: https://tw641.github.io/
(Backup URL: https://tw641.pages.dev/ )

Press the F12 key on your keyboard to open Developer Tools, and find the beginning of in the tag of the page source code.
The moment you click it open, you will inevitably let out a "Wow~" of amazement, seeing with your own eyes this eternal tribute universe hidden deep within.

Just as I wrote in the final two lines of the Easter Egg:

 > 回憶,之所以美麗
 > 正因,他別具意義
(Memories are beautiful, precisely because they hold a special meaning.)

I hope to share this small token of appreciation with everyone.
I also want to make a small starry sky wish to Mayday right here:
I hope this beautiful Tribute Time Machine can be seen by more people.

It is just like the GitHub Archive Program, which preserves 17,000 open-source projects on hardened film built to last a thousand years.
Housed in a casing decorated with AI-generated art, it stands quietly in the shadow of ancient bristlecone pines, looking up at the dome of the Milky Way.

The bristlecone pines on top of the White Mountains are the oldest living organisms in the world.
When they first began to sprout, woolly mammoths still roamed the earth, and the pyramids had not yet been built.

(You can click the link below to enjoy this video and see the bristlecone pines under that ancient starry sky:
https://archiveprogram.github.com/assets/img/tree-sm.mp4 )

I hope this digital museum and Dave's spirit can cross millennia in the digital universe, just like that starry sky and the bristlecone pines, becoming an immortal existence.

Thank you, Mayday's music, for always catching our regrets and longing, and turning them into the most beautiful starry sky.

@F.B.ex-TurrisTech Thank you so much, Frank! It really means a lot coming from you.

I am currently trying my best to reach out to Mayday's record label (B'in Music) and their management team in Taiwan to share this cross-cultural tribute with them. Fingers crossed that this "Time Machine" reaches them before their 29th anniversary!

Let's keep Dave's spirit shining in the open-source universe. Keep on rockin'! :guitar:

Thanks a lot for restoring this. It reminded me to think of Dave (just like dedicating 25.12 to Dave), and that reminded me that I miss him.

Now, let’s bring @TW641 - the author, back, also.

Let me chime in as a Taiwanese and I had a discussion with him someone else.

TLDR: good intention but it’s indeed spam.

The site is AI scrapping from everything, lots of over exaggerated things in Mandarin.

Hi everyone, the "mummy" is officially resurrected! :man_zombie:

@psherman Thank you so much for your incredible transparency and for putting the thread back together. It takes a true leader to publicly acknowledge a mistake and apologize. I completely understand why it was flagged initially (a new user dropping multiple links is basically the textbook definition of spam!). You were just protecting the community. I have massive respect for you, and there are absolutely zero hard feelings.

@moeller0 Reading your comment—"It reminded me to think of Dave... and that reminded me that I miss him"—almost brought me to tears. That is exactly, 100%, why I built this digital museum. Knowing it successfully reached his old friends and brought back those warm memories means the world to me. Mission accomplished. And a huge thanks to Frank (@F.B.ex-TurrisTech) for fighting the good fight for me behind the scenes.

@castiel652 Hello fellow Taiwanese! Thank you for chiming in. I completely understand that from a purely technical perspective, blending a deep open-source router algorithm (CAKE) with Taiwanese pop music culture (Mayday / JJ Lin) might seem unusual, emotional, or even "exaggerated."

However, I want to gently clarify one thing: This is absolutely not an "AI scraped" site.

Every single word of this tribute, both in English and Mandarin, was written from the heart. I spent countless nights digging through forgotten, obscure HTTP sites, reading through Dave's father's "Ron's Ravings," and manually porting CAKE to 12-year-old hardware. I hand-coded the digital museum, deliberately setting the CSS animation of the stars to a 4.0-second human breathing rate to symbolize life.

The Mandarin portion is intentionally written with high emotional depth because its goal is to act as a cultural bridge. It introduces Dave's selfless, unrewarded dedication to the Asian community by comparing him to the "Fool" (憨人) in Mayday's legendary song, and the unsung heroes in JJ Lin's "Twilight."

At the end of the day, my only goal is to make sure Dave Täht’s beautiful story travels as far as possible, crossing the boundaries of both technology and language. If my storytelling style isn't your cup of tea, I completely respect that! But the intention behind it is 100% human and pure.

Thank you all again for the warm welcome back. Let's keep Dave's spirit shining in the universe!

Keep on rockin',
Shiyu (TW641)

I don't want to distract too much from the actual intent of this post, but I do want to say the following:

  • This post had been flagged as spam for the same reasons @castiel652 raised.
  • Critically, I own the mistake of "approving" the flag (deleting the post and the user).
  • I've since had the opportunity to discuss this with a few trusted members of the community and with @TW641.
  • Although I don't want to speak for all those people, it is clear to me that @TW641 's github and contributions are legit as is the tribute to Dave.

With all that said, let's please keep this thread focused on the memories and legacy of Dave Taht.

【Director's Cut】The Final Archive of the Digital Museum

This digital museum project has officially come to an end today. Before I log off from the internet, as the creator (TW641), I want to leave behind this "Director's Cut" of the behind-the-scenes story and permanently archive this project.

When designing this website, just like polishing code, I secretly embedded parallel structures and rhymes into these words. These four sentences constantly echoed in my mind:

  • 輸入冰冷樸實的文「字」,道出溫馨動人的故「事」
(Typing cold, plain text to tell warm, moving stories.)
(The daylight mode is beautiful, but the night sky mode shines even brighter.)
  • "The darker the night, the brighter the Täht."
(Fighting Bufferbloat with a craftsman's spirit, letting the stars shine endlessly in the open-source universe.)

如果有人看過原始的 readme.md,會發現我最初寫的是 "The brighter the light" 以及 "Light up the star"。但隨著專案的推進與自我反省,我將它們改成了 "The brighter the Täht" 與 "Light up the Täht"。

If anyone has seen the original readme.md, you might notice that I initially wrote "The brighter the light" and "Light up the star". However, through the progression of the project and deep self-reflection, I changed them to "The brighter the Täht" and "Light up the Täht". This not only preserves the original poetic rhythm but also serves as a profound tribute to Dave's surname (which means "Star" in Estonian). It is also a reflection of my personal growth—evolving from a simple technical port to a profound resonance with a great soul.

Many might ask, why write down so many obscure behind-the-scenes stories right at the beginning? My reason is simple: As perhaps the final large-scale port for legacy devices, this project serves as a digital museum. Before his digital footprints fade into the void of the internet, there are forgotten stories—cold facts and warm lore—that must be preserved here.

I also designed the very bottom of the website to feel like the end-credits roll of a movie. Down there, you will see:

:star:Dave Täht passed away on 2025.04.01. Today is 2026.03.22.

:shooting_star: Illuminating the open-source universe for 355 days (11 M 21 D).

© 2026 TW641. Built with passion for a Bufferbloat-free world.

The first line reminds us of the day Dave became Starstuff; the second line is a silent question posed to the visitors: In this passing time, what have you done for the world? For the third line, I chose to place myself at the very end. Because I realized a profound truth: "Success doesn't have to belong to me, but only through persistent, collective effort does success even become possible."

Just like the opening of JJ Lin's music video "Twilight" (不為誰而作的歌), when asked who he wanted to thank the most in his life, he smiled and said: "Wow! Too many! It's like there are many people in life you don't know... um... I write songs!" I don't write songs; I write code. I am simply using my own way to pay tribute to every "Dear Stranger" like Dave—the unsung heroes who quietly save others in the hidden corners of the internet. His life perfectly embodies the quote at the end of that MV: "The living support one another. The smallest god in the universe happens to share the same name as the greatest one; they are called 'Thank You'."

Dave's pure soul also echoes the lyrics of Patti YC's song "Zero Impurity" (無雜質):

  • 「怕你在等日出的地方,會迷戀伴隨的星光」—— Dave 就是那默默伴隨世界、化作星塵的星光。(Afraid that where you wait for the sunrise, you might fall for the accompanying starlight) — Dave is that silent starlight accompanying the world.
(Whether it is madness or kindness, those who understand will naturally appreciate it) — This perfectly mirrors his "madness" and kindness in refusing lucrative contracts to insist on free open-source.
(If our aspirations differ, it's still better than remaining an unknown identity / A person's genuine truth cannot be imitated; zero impurity shines the brightest) — This is exactly his pure, fame-free soul with "zero impurity".

(As Mayday sings in "Tough": "The paths we've walked become our footprints; The destinations we cannot reach become our aspirations. Taking off this mask, I want to say thank you. Thank you for accompanying me all the way here.")

(A completely Bufferbloat-free world is precisely our shared aspiration. Even if the road ahead is still long, I firmly believe that every open-source footprint we leave behind will eventually guide those who come next to reach it.)

(On Valentine's Day this year, Patti wrote a wish for her song on Instagram: "I hope one day this song can fly very, very far away, gather more flavors and colors, and eventually fly back to me." Knowing how fleeting time is, I decided to follow the spirit of the GitHub Archive Program and seal this digital museum right here. I also hope this museum, like that song, will fly very, very far away, spreading this "zero-impurity" spirit to every corner of the open-source universe.)

May the starry sky of the open-source universe shine forever.

To the OpenWrt community,

I am stepping away from this thread and this forum now. But before I close my tab for the final time, I want to share one last, incredibly beautiful synchronicity with you all.

On Valentine's Day this year (February 14, 2026), LibreQoS dedicated a beautiful Facebook post specifically to this legacy CAKE port project of mine, calling it a "Time-Traveling Valentine's Gift" for Dave Täht:
:link: https://www.facebook.com/libreqos/posts/pfbid02JCNKynFeQ48FdBMFbVoAoWFDLfgiA55mH3Fyz76xKHdEU86XkxgVziWzXoRYbbT1l

When I read their tribute, I happened to check Dave's profile here on the OpenWrt forum. And then, I saw it.

If you go to Dave's summary page right now:
:link: https://forum.openwrt.org/u/dtaht/summary

You will see his very last digital footprint on this forum:
"Seen Feb 14, 2025"

Exactly one year apart. Last year's February 14th, and this year's February 14th. My tribute project literally became a time-traveling gift crossing time and space to meet his final footprint. If this isn't destiny and a cosmic coincidence, then what is?

It is as if the universe itself left a romantic, poetic timestamp on his legacy. I will leave you with the beautiful words from LibreQoS:

"May his soul find eternal peace, and his spirit live on forever in our routers."

Thank you, OpenWrt community. My watch ends here.
Keep on rockin', and goodbye. :guitar:
