Setting WAN to static IP loses domain resolution

hi guys

what it says on the tin - I'm setting this up behind my current modem, so I'm wanting to make the openwrt build (PC) the firewall. There are two nics - one I've defined as LAN, the other as WAN. LAN goes straight into my network, WAN goes into my modem. By modem I specfically mean an Netcomm NF10WV that authenticates with my ISP.

If I set the WAN interface to a static IP with the correct IP / subnet/gateway, I lose domain resolution. If I set it to DHCP (meaning it's pulling a C-class interal IP from the netcomm) it's suddenly all smiles. I can ping the modem just fine from the WAN interface, but it won't resolve. Is there a DNS setting I'm stupidly missing somewhere? I've been combing through but can't see it in the GUI.

Ooooh Im an idiot, it's under advanced. Set to google/cloudflare and there we go.
