September 2026 - router recommendation for 2Gbps connections (symmetrical+asym)

Hi All,
I hope you are all well.
What would be the good recommendation for a router handling

  1. two ISPs at 1Gbps each but one symmetrical and the other asymmetrical connection
  2. no wifi (wifi is going to be handled by a separate AP)
  3. no switching (this is already handled by separate 1Gbps switches)

From the pinned article I can see that symmetrical is a game changer and requires decent CPU resources.

Let's consider two use cases:

  1. lightweight use for home - 2x asymmetrical connections
  2. medium intensive - small business, home business - 1x symmetrical + 1x asymmetrical

Please advise

Do you want to use both connections at the same time (load balancing) or just as a failover (mwan)?

I don't know if a device with a filogic 830 (MT7986A(V)) or filogic 880 (MT7988AV) is sufficient, the next stage would be a x86-64 based device.

Good question.
I think load balancing.
Thank you for clarification

I was eyeing the BPI4 for a while, but they stopped making the 8G version, and the 4G version is costing now double of what the 8G cost initially. Thank you RAMpocalypse; but I do not believe a 4G memory module costs 160E, even with the crazy RAM prices. I think banana pi has also switched manufactoring to BPI4 Pro entirely; but 8G is sold out appearantly, and 4G even there is 320E or so.

Which is just really making heavy abuse of the RAMpocalypse really; though I admit; chips are about 50 USD a pop now. insane. Hopefully CXMT can help alive the situation sometime soon.
