It kinda sounds like what the OP wanted was for devices to send the packets down a wire or something so that he could snooping them, even though they never reach their destination. Like D1 sends packet, maybe R1 forwards it down some wire maybe as if to R2... And S1 a snooping research device I just made up sees the packet... While R2 and D2 of course being disconnected never actually see the packet... Nevertheless somehow the packet gets onto a wire and S1 sees it.
