Seeking Advice: Tuning OpenWrt Settings on Linksys Velop MX5300 with IoT and 5GHz Devices

Hello everyone,

I have 4 units of Linksys Velop MX5300 (acting as Access Points only) running the SNAPSHOT version of OpenWrt firmware using the following file: openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-linksys_mx5300-squashfs-factory.

I just set up the Wi-Fi configuration, and all 4 units are identically configured as follows:

  • Radio0: Mode: AC | Channel: Auto | Width: 80 MHz (5 GHz)
  • Radio1: Mode: AX | Channel: Auto | Width: 80 MHz (5 GHz)
  • Radio2: Mode: AX | Channel: Auto | Width: 20 MHz (2.4 GHz)

I’m new to using OpenWrt, having previously used consumer-grade mesh systems like the Deco Mesh, where these detailed settings were abstracted. I’d like to know if this configuration is optimal or if there’s room for improvement.

My Setup:

  • About 40+ IoT devices (smart switches, bulbs, thermostat, cameras, door locks, etc.) on 2.4 GHz (this is the most critical part for me, as it was the main reason for switching to OpenWrt due to stability issues with my previous system).
  • Around 10-15 devices on 5 GHz, including 3-4 laptops, 3-4 iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, etc.

Key Questions:

  1. 160 MHz Band Issue: I noticed that the 160 MHz band is only available on Radio1, but it only works if I select channels 52, 56, 60, or 64. Am I missing something? Should I set these same channels across all Access Points or keep them different for each unit?
  2. 2.4 GHz Optimization: Since I have a lot of IoT devices on this band, are there any specific tweaks or recommendations to improve stability and performance (e.g., legacy mode settings, channel width adjustments)?
  3. General Tuning: Are there additional OpenWrt tweaks I should consider for this setup? For example, transmit power settings, specific channel assignments for the APs, or anything else?

Any guidance, suggestions, or experiences with similar setups would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Thats fair as long as you live in "driver default" country . When you fix that you get more channels.

iot-ac radio is meant to fet where you have (substandard) iot like wifi-b wpa1 tkip etc. So you can keep main radios with EAP or WPA3 and AX

Ok looks like when I changed the country to US, my Radio stopped completely. Any tips on why it did it? I had to revert it back to default country.
