SamKnows SK-WB8 Installation help (new issue)

The new versions of the WhiteBox comes with LEDE Reboot installed.

I tried to install OpenWRT trying to follow this guide:

On one of the replies, someone said to run "firstboot -y && reboot"

After running that, I lost the option to enter failsafe and now cannot send any commands via PuTTY. Cannot choose any options in the boot menu because it defaults to 0 and keeps booting. Here is the bootlog:

That person was @psherman - perhaps he can assist. I've tagged him for your convenience.

  • This appears to still be non-OpenWrt firmware
  • The command you entered should not affect the UBoot bootloader. I assume you were able to interrupt the UBoot previously?

While we await his reply, can you provide a little detail/description why you ran the command, what steps you performed, etc.?

Lastly, I want to make sure you've seen the WIki: https://openwrt.org/toh/samknows/sk-wb8#installation

Hope this helps.

This command is to reset to the OpenWrt defaults. It will not (or should not) affect your ability to get into failsafe mode, as it is purely resetting the overlay (failsafe boots up without the overlay -- it reads only from ROM).

As I had stated in that other thread, and as @lleachii said here, you appear to be running a fork of OpenWrt firmware that is quite different from the official version. Therefore, you may have to ask the vendor for help.

Thank you for the reply. Appreciate it very much. I'm still new to this forum and am not sure how to use a lot of the functions, so I apologise for that.

While we await his reply, can you provide a little detail/description why you ran the command, what steps you performed, etc.?

A: I ran the command because I was trying to follow how to install OpenWRT onto this router. The main page where it details the installation was a bit confusing for me so I referred to the forum mentioned. Apparenty this command was supposed to re-initialise the ethernet connection as default. And so I ran it.

Up until then, I could interrupt the boot process and enter failsafe as normal. But after running that command, I could no longer see the "press f to enter failsafe" option in the CLI and could not interrupt the boot process as it would just default to "option 3" without giving me the chance to select some other option. I ran this command after entering failsafe

And yes you're absolutely correct, it is NOT running OpenWRT but another firmware called LEDE Reboot

There's some nuance here....

Without getting into the political bit of the history here regarding the reasoning, LEDE was a fork of OpenWrt that was released in 2017 (hence LEDE 17.01). OpenWrt 15.05 had been released almost 2 years prior, and LEDE was really just the next major release (for all practical purposes). Then LEDE merged back with OpenWrt for the relase of OpenWrt 18.06.

So.... OpenWrt 15.05 > LEDE 17.01 > OpenWrt 18.06 -- effectively just successive major revisions, and all very old, EOL and unsupported (we've subsequently seen 19.07, 21.02 and now 22.03).

BUT... what your device is running is not the official LEDE release. It was highly customized by the vendor for their device. Therefore, much like there are vendors who use customized/propriatary forks of modern versions of OpenWrt to power their devices, your device has a bespoke version of LEDE. Generally speaking, forks and customized versions of OpenWrt are not supported here, unless the developer/vendor is active on this forum and can thus offer assistance for where there are material differences from how OpenWrt actually works. Your version is both vendor customized element and long since EOL'd and unsupported.

All that to say... your version

Ah I see. Thanks for the explanation I understand better now. I don't know what I can do now. Don't think the vendor will be of much help unfortunately.

Yup.... I think that's a safe assumption.

I'd recommend investing in some newer hardware that is supported by OpenWrt, even on the used market.

Funny enough I actually have an Asus RT-AC88U which supports OpenWRT and everything else but I'm keeping it on Asus-Merlin for now because it makes Cloudflare DNS work properly (I'm basically using my lodge internet service which I have no control over as it is managed by the lodge company - and they set pre-defined DNS servers and I think block all else). Any of the custom open source stuff pretty much breaks that functionality.

I have SK-WB8 with external antennas and it was loaded with the same LEDE r3531. I couldn't access the console, so I used debricking TFTP method to load 23.05.0 stable release. It worked! I am getting a decent 500 Mb/s wifi, not bad for a 2015 hardware. OTOH I am having an issue with PCI device detection. Only 5G radio is visible. I checked original logs and pci 0000:02:00.0 is definetly there.
