Is there anything special I need to do do that I set up my Samba shares via the GUI with luci-app-samba4?
I’ve tried many times, rebooting, removing cache files ... nothing. No new menu options appear in the GUI.

You will need to install super for samba4 on the router (not just LuCI). And also make sure that your client device support it.
