Samba access delays?

Hi all,
Didn't notice an answer in the search.
I have a Banana Pi R4 with OpenWRT installed. It is running fine except one issue. When accessing the shared HDD from other locations, there is a long delay before the content is available. This occurs whether using Kodi on a RPi2, or Linux Mint on my laptop. Once the connection is established, everything seems to run at full speed. However, if there is a delay before you do anything (like you leave the unit alone for a minute) the delay returns. There is no delay when you are playing videos or copying files, as long as you keep the connection active. Once there is a pause in accessing the remote drive, the delay returns.
I'm sure there is a setting somewhere that applies to this, but I'm not used to OpenWRT.
Can anyone help shed some light?
Thanks!

You'll have to ask the people growing the bananas, the r4 isn't supported here - you're running a 3rd party fw.

Could it be because the HDD is spinning down ?

Please excuse my mis-remembering the model number. It is the R3, not the R4 I have. Your response tweaked me to check because I know it was supported hardware.
I'm not sure if its because the HDD is spinning down because the delay exists for another user accessing the drive while the first user is streaming video from it. It also exists if I am currently navigating around on the drive on my laptop while attempting to access the drive from my phone. Although, I just tried it and the delay only seemed to be ten seconds rather than the thirty it usually is while actively browsing folders on the laptop while trying to access the drive on the laptop.
If it is the harddrive spinning down, how do I fix that?
