Root password keeps changing on its own

I went through the WTF stage quite quickly and found my build was actually too big, resulting in the overlay partition being created in tmpfs.

I've been locked out before when my known password wouldn't work. A large image was my culprit, too.

I could not login via LuCI (correct password brought you back to the login screen)
