Role and use of OpenWrt

Hi,
I need a programmable access point to implement new schemes (e.g. new radio allocation scheme) and to host applications. However, I did not found any type of programmable access points.
I want to know what is the role of openwrt and if it allows me to do such operations for specific types of access points.

Thank you for your response. If I understood well, openwrt allows a user to change the original firwmare by the openwrt firmware that enabes the user to personalize the configuration of the access point.
