I was thinking of getting an all-in-one modem/router, but OpenWrt support for these devices is unclear. If I'm wrong please let me know, it would all this a lot easier.
Instead, I would go for a dedicated modem and router setup, but I would like to avoid the double NAT issue. My devices are as follows: Speedport Smart 4 modem from Telekom on 100Mb/s VDSL, TL WR1043ND router with OpenWrt and a Wireguard VPN connection installed. I have a NAS behind the router that needs to be accessible from the Internet.
I am looking for resources, step-by-step guides on how to achieve this, as I am not very familiar with networking. Any advice is appreciated!
What if I have a server behind the Wireguard router that needs to be accessed from the Internet, through the modem? Doesn't double NAT influence the accessibility of the server then?
So I received the Speedport Smart 4 and set it up in bridge mode. I then connected the openwrt router's LAN1 (should it be connected to the blue port?) to the modem's LAN4 (according to the manual's instructions). Now I have no internet from the router. Any ideas what I missed?
The upstream network and the openwrt lan must be on different subnets.
If you plug a computer into the modem’s lan port, does it get internet connectivity? What IP address does it get assigned (public or private, if private, please post that here).

I have no connectivity from the modem's LAN1, however I can access the modem's web interface (169.254.2.1). The computer's ip is 169.254.105.x (not sure if this is a public ip).

The problem starts with your modem. 169.254.x.x is a "self assigned" IP address -- it means that there is no DHCP server running on the modem, and thus the downstream devices cannot get an automatically assigned IP address.
Ok. So if the modem is in bridge mode, it will pass the ip address from your isp to the next device downstream.
What you are seeing is a situation where this is not happening. There may be an issue connecting to the isp, or something else wrong with the modem configuration. You’ll need to troubleshoot this first - you may need to talk to your isp and/or check the configuration of the modem to resolve this.
Yeah, looks like your modem is not providing an IP to the downstream devices, even on LAN4. This means that you'll need to get some coffee and sit down with that manual and/or talk to the ISP.
Just to be clear, this is not currently and OpenWrt issue - it is related to your modem config and/or ISP. I wish I could help on this part, but , I don't have any specific info or experience with your modem or your ISP so nothing to offer at this point.
So I ended up resetting the modem and setting it to bridge mode again. This time I get an IP assigned to the router: 192.168.2.30. Still no internet though.
