Hm, I can't spot anything obviously wrong... Could you check if you really have the module mt76x0e in your firmware (lsmod and/or in/lib/modules/5.*) When experimenting with the build system, it often happens that the kernel modules selected in the image Makefile are not built. I always run make menuconfig to make sure that the correct kernel modules are included in the build.
