Repeat wireless signal

Hello,

I'm new to openwrt, so my question might be stupid.
I would like my openWRT ap to repeat my wireless signal but I can't get it to work.
the situation I would like to have is
Router -- WLAN -- openWRT --WLAN -- Laptop.
I would like to boost the signal so I can use the same SSID and password as for the router so I don't have to switch.
I tried a mesh setup. but I'm not sure if my router needs to be compatable for that.
and I tried some bridging. but I can't get it to work.
can someone point me in the correct direction? thank you.

There is a guide for what you are trying to achieve. If both devices support WDS, then it is the optimal solution.

thank you for your answhere.
I checked out the manual and took the steps as described using the GUI.
But when I try to connect to connect to my openWRT device, the dns seems to be working.
I can get IP addresses of websites.
but the traffic fails. Like the gateway isn't working or something.

Next to that I'm not sure if I can use the same SSID as my main network here, or will it conflict somehow.

Please copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button:
grafik
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have

ubus call system board; \
uci export network; uci export wireless; \
uci export dhcp; uci export firewall; \
head -n -0 /etc/firewall.user; \
ip -4 addr ; ip -4 ro li tab all ; ip -4 ru; \
ls -l /etc/resolv.* /tmp/resolv.*; head -n -0 /etc/resolv.* /tmp/resolv.*

It is up to you. Having a different SSID makes it easier to control where the client will connect.

In my first attempt I will have a different SSID so I can be sure where to connect to and that there won't be any conflicts.
When I have this working I will try the SSID problem.

With this:

and this:

... you cannot go very far.
Better reset the router and follow again the configuration steps, as it seems that you have some leftovers from previous configurations.

I'm not sure where I'm looking at here,
but resetting and starting over did the trick.
Thank you very much.

My guess is that you had some vpn-pbr or mwan3 package installed. Something that creates rules for source based routing.
