i am going to buy a asus 19 or 2900 and was thinking about installing OpenWRT. i read some of the openWRT docs and was wondering if the benefits of installing OpenWRT outweights the original software. What can i look forward to with OpenWRT over the original firmware?

OpenWrt pros:

  • Regular updates--keep your device secure against me vulnerabilities (some manufacturers don't update their original firmware frequently).
  • Open and unlocked--gives you full control on your device.
  • Extensible--wide range of packages available (or you can even develop your own) to add more functionalities to the router.

Cons:

  • It's not as simple as some original firmwares.
  • For some devices, some features might not be supported, or WiFi speed might be affected a bit by driver availability.
