Realtek RTL8196C Bootloader on Edimax BR6258N

Hi, apologies for this non Openwrt post but this is the only place I've found any useful info on the Realtek bootloader:
https://openwrt.org/docs/techref/bootloader/realtek#:~:text=The%20RealTek%20bootloader%20was%20written,and%20optionally%20HTTP%20and%20DHCP%20.

I have an old Edimax BR6258N that is stuck in a bootloop after what I think was a corrupt config change. I've found the serial console & can upload a new official Edimax image via tftp but this does not seem to help as I think it's the config file rather than the boot image that needs to be changed. Does anyone know if / how the busybox boot process can be interrupted or is there another image I can try to load that will work?

Thanks.

This device is not supported by OpenWrt (as you appear to already know). Therefore, this is not the correct place to get support, since we focus on OpenWrt, not general networking support.

Understood, just thought someone might have some ideas.
