For the past month i have been battling with wireless devices disconnecting from 5ghz wifi and i cannot figure it out
when a client disconnects the logs show
plenty of daemon.notice hostapd: phy1-ap0: AP-STA-DISCONNECTED <device mac> and kern.info kernel: [47337.586961] ath10k_ahb a000000.wifi: mac flush vdev 0 drop 0 queues 0x1 ar->paused: 0x0 arvif->paused: 0x0
I cant seem to find anyway of making it stable on snapshot builds and im close to cutting my losses and going back to stock firmware.
i have tried many diffrent settings for the wlans
i have tried different firmware and kmods
i dont know what to do at this point as its causing my family problems on a hourly basis now
It will have all sorts of problems stick with one or the other.
It is not widly supported and not really a router issue it is a client issue.
Also is the issue using apple devices ?
are you able to reconect?
Next time it happens :
SSH in to the router and run logread | grep STA
post the results
the devices are able to reconnect manually by going into settings and tapping the ssid
it seems to happen mostly with samsung S21s while most of the other devices dont have the issue as often
I have 4 Samsung devices
Samsung A20 ( has dropped once or twice on 2.4ghz)
Two Samsung S21s (drops frequently on either 5ghz and 2.4ghz)
Samsung A22 5g ( havent had a drop i can recall)
1 apple ipad pro
and a few other devices that havent really had issues
I will use the stock firmware for a day or 2 then go back to openwrt and wait for a drop so i can post the logs since people were getting frustrated
Please copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button:
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:
@badulesia i did know a few of those but it never crossed that DFS may be causing the disconnects as some channels my devices cant see certain channels above 100 which is strange as my phone the a22 doesnt seem to ever have these disconnections
ill try leave it on auto for a while and see what happens but i fear it may cause more issues
Ill also post log outputs after tonight as i have swapped back to openwrt from oem
Just a thought, the router could maybe also see a obstruction as false dfs/radar detection things like bluetooth beacons might interfere on higher channels on 5GHz. (Edit: It is however very likely for 5ghz wifi as bluetooth is 2ghz but still possible, it could also be something else what it sees as possible radar detection)
Also I readed somewhere that in the netherlands 5ghz band was not fully supported so i use channel 36, not sure about GB as country.
DFS can even shutdown the radio, it you set the channell manualy, and that a radar is detected. Meanwhile your channel (161) is out of range of DFS.
I had issue with radio0 until I put it on auto. It chooses its channel based on radar detection, than it works. It could happen that it changes channel afterward.
Also try to set 149 instead of 161.

Mac 1 and 4 are the devices that has been having too many issues
Set power transmit for radio0 and 2 to 20dBm. Check what happens if you use radio2 with channel 36.
Have you opened the device to check if radio cables aren't unclipped ? I had the case once.
Last night I did test radio2 at channel 51 just to see what would happen and to my surprise I was able to get a link speed of 866mbps on my iPad while radio0 never goes more the 650
And despite the lower transmit power it can hold a longer range than the higher power of radio0
So at the moment what I have setup is both radios will use the same name with 802.14r fast transition with DAWN choosing which radio is best
That way it can hopefully stay connected longer.
Is it possible that radio0 is having degraded performance because of a loose cable after seeing radio2 having better connections?
That's the trick. Even if this is a DFS channel, the radio will switch if necessary. Setting on auto is the wiser.
That may be the reason. Try to force a higher power transmit and check.
I'm using radio0 with channel on auto, and I have no issue. Nevertheless my devices are close to the router (4m max) and I have willingly lower the power transmit. If you still have issue that can also be hardware related.
I see, it would have been fine to use auto if my devices could see all the channels above 100 but some don't so I guess I might just stick to radio2
Thats fair, i have tried setting it to the max transmit power before and it does work but it would seem that trying to serve a small flat mainly off that radio is not the greatest idea as some devices may be more than 8 meters away and have walls between them.
My router in on the 1st floor. When I go to ground level I have a poor signal, despite being just under the router. Signal power decrease rapidly, being worst with walls.
You may be right to stick to radio2. it's the most powerfull and compatible.
for radio0 it will always be lower than for radio2 due to regulations.
Have a look at this document. Power transmit is limited to 25mW in EU (ok, I know about Brexit ) for channels >149, while 200mW for channels >36
Ahhhhh I see so that would explain why devices struggled to connect and stay connected.
that's on me I should have done research about channels and how it affects tx power.
Thank you.
I will use radio2 and auto channel, from now on until I have a reason to use radio0 such as an extender.
