Question about interfaces

When I create an static address interface I can specify a gateway address. What is this used for? The address of the interface is specified under ipv4 adress.

It's the default gateway, ie a static route to via the IP address will be added to the routing table when the interface is up.

The default route is used when there is no other matching route with a longer prefix for a particular destination address.

BTW usually only wan interfaces have a default gateway.
