When I create an static address interface I can specify a gateway address. What is this used for? The address of the interface is specified under ipv4 adress.
It's the default gateway, ie a static route to 0.0.0.0/0 via the IP address will be added to the routing table when the interface is up.
The default route is used when there is no other matching route with a longer prefix for a particular destination address.
BTW usually only wan interfaces have a default gateway.
