Proposed update to WDS documentation

Hi,

I propose updating https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/atheroswds and the other WDS documentation page to mention that if your routers have 2 or more wireless channels, then you must enable STP on the LAN interfaces. In my experience failing to do so leads to a network loop that takes down all routers: WDS and mysterious network disruptions (network loop?)

Thanks,
Gili

Also, while on the topic... the LuCI documentation at https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/atheroswds says to:

Join the previously created wireless network and when asked, set the firewall zone to β€œlan”,

But for someone who has never used OpenWRT before, it's not clear how to do that. Please break this down into multiple steps and add screenshots like you have done for the other steps.

Thank you,
Gili

The following two steps are also missing from the documentation:

  • Network -> DHCP and DNS -> DNS forwardings: Add the ip address of the AP router
Otherwise you'll get this error trying to ping google from the WDS Station: "ping: bad address 'google.com'"
  • For each WDS Station: Network -> Interfaces -> LAN -> Edit -> Set IPv4 gateway to the ip address of the AP router
Otherwise you'll get this error trying to ping google from the WDS Station: "ping: sendto: Network unreachable"

@cowwoc Wiki policy is not to repeat itself, and I believe there is documentation on acting as a wireless client elsewhere on the WIki. A pointer to that doc is all the atheroswds page should have.

Agreed.

I'm new to OpenWRT so I wouldn't know where to find this (plus I don't think I have wiki edit rights). Are you able to add this link?

Thanks,
Gili

Done. See the updated https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/atheroswds#luci

It would be great if you could upload the screenshots directly to the wiki and make them appear inline, so that no extra link click is required. Would do it myself but have my hands full with other matters atm

Cool! Thanks for doing this!
