Problems with RPi 400 no Wireless file

Hi all,

I wanted to setup a travel router and thought it's a simple gothrough, sadly its not.

I downloaded this file to flash to memory card:
https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/22.03.5/targets/bcm27xx/bcm2711/openwrt-22.03.5-bcm27xx-bcm2711-rpi-4-squashfs-factory.img.gz

while configuration I fugured out, that wireless file is missing in /etc/config
therefore I created it manually exactly like here and followed the instructions to add brcmfmac43456, because it was missing as well:

That did not solve the problem for me. There is still no wifi.

after adding wireless manually, I have the Wireless Option und Network on Gui, but there seems to be something wrong with the driver, because it is called a generic Wifi module and does not find any Network.

how is it possible that all this things are missing with a fresh installation? What do I need to check next?

I just started again and reflashed the sd card. What I figured out, that on first boot there seems to be a bootloop. my screen stays in the typical colored screen, which normally is there for only 1 second or less. no way to contact via ssh. the only chance is to cut power off and reboot. On second boot there appears the colored screen and then it starts loading the settings like the screen of dmesg. (and this happens every single time i flash the sd card newly).

Maybe something is going wrong on first boot and destroys something for the next run?

Hope for some help. Don't have an Idea how to overcome an error on first boot when I haven't done anything at this stage.

A rare case could theoretically be that a Raspberry 400 behaves differently from a CM4 or Pi4 and that something is wrong in the OpenWRT image. I found one more thread for a Pi 400 complaining about the same issue.

I am not sure, if one of the following will be of help, but maybe give it a quick check, as it is due to stuff happening outside of OpenWRT scope. If you are not aware of that, you might not have looked in all places: To me, it seems that the Raspberry is packed with lots of proprietary stuff (and yes, lots of Broadcom parts) under the hood and that certain things might turn out weird, if some of these proprietary parts do not behave as expected.

You could install and boot a regular Raspberry OS once. A post in the forum once indicated that Raspberry OS seems to update some proprietary flash data in certain releases. But I am not an expert here, just a dumb messsenger.

Then maybe ensure that all SD card partitions got recreated as needed, when applying the OpenWRT image: OpenWRT Raspberry images in my eyes have this rather unique layout, where the Raspberry first seems to boot into a proprietary Raspberry kernel from a FAT partition and then seems to continue to boot into the actual second OpenWRT kernel in the other partition (not sure if my impression is correct, but that second kernel and the FAT partition is at least there for mine). And I once searched for hours, how to get a damned 1wire protocol in OpenWRT up and running, until I finally found out that there is an additional out-of-band config switch in that FAT partition, which does not belong to OpenWRT and is not really pointed to in OpenWRT doc. But that config seems to control, what the OpenWRT kernel is able to do. So maybe if there is weird mismatches between the 2 partitions, maybe ensure to have both properly wiped and recreated (the OpenWRT firmware image takes care of both).

Maybe give the 23.05.rc3 image a try as well. Maybe you are lucky and something got fixed that relates to this.

Iirc, you need to run the standard raspberry pi os initially and go though the first-boot setup. Importantly, you’ll select the county code for the WiFi.

Then, you can flash a card with openwrt and it should work.

Keep in mind that the WiFi on all raspberry pi devices is really low end and will be limited in bandwidth and capabilities.

okay, I did use my Pi400 before....no idea if i did that on first boot.

but did it again and chose my country code in Raspberry pi imager.....nothing changed. still the same issue (with 23.05.rc3)

start hating my raspberry pi400.....resolution is not to get to 1080p in Pi Os....seems to be slower than my Pi2B....maybe I have a faulty version.

This pi400 should be almost identical to a pi4b except for the form factor and the built in keyboard. If things aren’t working properly when using the raspberry pi os, it is possible something is wrong with your unit.
