Adding openvpn to it might be too much for it.

CPU-wise they are the same. RAM and storage are double in the MT300, so it will server longer time, provided you are content with the speeds you'll achieve.

Try it again today at some point. If you didn't understand from the other topic that @tmomas posted, most likely something went wrong during the compiling process, hence the missing packet. It should be available after the next building cycle. If it is not, we'll notify the maintainers to have a look at it.

Try using the proper command to load the repositories, first:
opkg update
opkg install openvpn-openssl

I set the mirror to http://mirror.kumi.systems/openwrt because the official downloads.openwrt.org doesn't load for me, I get timeouts constantly.
There may be a lot of downloading today, snapshots have had issues for ~36 hours on various platforms for various reasons.

I'm running into similar problems installing OpenVPN on a Linksys 1900ACS with 18.06.3.

Seems like the kmod feed is to blame, hopefully related to the bug you posted.
