PPPoE too slow in Archer C6

Hi, i have a TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 (EU) configured as PPPoE. It gets net so all good from that part but, with ISPs router y could reach 500mbps (sym) and with with Archer C6 i can only reach 120/140 mbps.

Did i miss something configuring PPPoE?

Thanks.

are they using the same hw, internally ?

PPPoE requires lots of CPU time, run htop from cli while you use the router, see if you max out the CPU.

Surely not. The other router is a ZTE - H3600P with Wifi6

that 1st PID used 6% (max) with a speed test

the speed test:

use htop instead, but at 40/65 you're pretty far from the max you've experienced.

This is the output while executing speedtest

Sorry but i had to perform reset because i didnt have free space to install htop

now you see the reason for the throughput cap ....

there is no way to get some more? i thought this was a good router

stock fw might get you better performance, since they can use hw acceleration unavailable in openwrt.

it's an old router/arch, not built for the speed your ISP is providing.

While you don't explicitly said so, the single-core htop screenshot suggests the archer c6 v2, ath79 with 775 MHz mips74kc. While I would expect it to go a little faster even with PPPoE (unless you're running other ressource intensive tasks at the same time), this is far from a fast SOC - and that does limit your maximum throughput, especially with PPPoE.

Well... thank you both for your help. I think at this point i can only look for a new router. Can you recommend me some? You know, best price-quality for 500mbps speed.

You both maybe remember me from a Ace Magician T8 Plus thread, i remember you and im glad to know about you. Hope all is going well.

Thanks again.

where are you, geographically ?

Spain :es:

it'd probably go for https://openwrt.org/toh/xiaomi/ax3200, it's ~65€ on ES Amazon.

I thought you were using the Acemagician as router ?

hmm a bit expensive for my reqs i think, but i will check more later. Thanks

I was using it for a while but I don't have such great needs. What I did with it was format it as a media server.
I don't know if I could install an OpenWRT virtual machine and continue using it as a router and as a multimedia center at the same time. In any case, it does not emit Wi-Fi so the configuration can be difficult with the virtual machine.

I suppose that the Ace Magician could process everything and a router like the Archer C6 could only emit a Wi-Fi signal in 2.4 and 5GHz but I am not entirely clear how to do that type of configuration

if you want 500gbit routing with PPPoE, you won't be able to go much cheaper.

Yes, i suppossed that but the thing is the VM hehe. I will do some tests

Ok, i will try first with Acemagician and if my job (time to test) dont let me do something with it, ill buy it

do you see it viable @frollic ?

sure, but I've never done it myself, and it's probably not the simplest of tasks.

might be easier to run openwrt, and have VMs there, than the other way around.

I will try both ways and I will tell you about it in case you are curious.

thanks for all frollic.

ax3000t might, might, be an option.

Disclaimer: I don't own this particular (nor any other device with filogic 820) and do read up the full thread and wiki page before buying anything. But with 500 MBit/s and PPPoE I would look at x86_64 first.
