PPPoE configuration issue - help requested

I am trying to configure my OpenWRT 23.05.02 router to use an external VDSL modem (Draytek Vigor 130). I've read all of the documents I can google on the subject, but something is still not right.

I have the modem configured in bridge mode with VLAN tagging (so the router does not need to do the VLAN tagging).

I can connect straightforwardly with PPPoE when I plug it into my Mac, yet with my OpenWRT router, the connection fails part-way through.

With OpenWRT:

What I think is the key part of the DSA network configuration:

config interface 'wan2'
	option device 'wan'
	option proto 'pppoe'
	option username 'REDACTED'
	option password 'REDACTED'
	option ipv6 '0'
	option force_link '1'
	option keepalive '5 1'
	option peerdns '0'
	option delegate '0'

Clearly the PPP communication starts, but then after a certain point it seems that the router is not receiving responses that allow it to proceed with authentication.

Any ideas?

option device 'wan.35' might help .

Seems exactly like the issue I just had. Try increasing the timeout as explained here New to OpenWRT, Need help configuring PPPoE - #8 by bill888

If you do want your router to do the VLAN tagging (and not the vigor), see Configuration Issues OpenWRT 19.07.3 and DrayTek Vigor 130 - #4 by slh.

So I finally got around to looking at this again, with the intention of trying all of the helpful suggestions above. (Thank you @murraydr44 , @Shloimy , @slh )

Instead what I found is that it just worked -- with no configuration changes at all. I can only presume that somehow in the intervening weeks, between the router and the modem, something happened (maybe a reboot), that fixed it.
