I don't know who thinks it is a good idea to close the #1 google result thread for such niche topic and to put a permanent roadblock on information sharing but I hope you can recognize how damaging this practice is.
99% of people interested in this topic no longer have a way to find each other and this is not a "SFP GPON" problem, this is happenning to every other niche topic in this forum.
I understand that this is probably done for the convenience of moderators or for some antiquated notion such as the belief that "necroposting" is a bad thing, it is obviously not.
Please stop closing, unlisted and obfuscating discussions and other destructive moderator behaviours.
But even if some practice is a tradition and always been that way, that doesn't mean it has been causing damage the entire time. The people who have been silenced, generally are not heard. 99% will just move on. In fact most people who end up here from google, never jump all the hoops it takes to even create an account. There is a lot of friction for someone to even go from search to comment, the general ratio is 1 to 100. But when after all that, the thread, the one thread about the topic, it closed and now you have to go and find who to beg to it to be reopened. You can add another 100 to 1 ratio of it not happening and it's just the end for that discussion topic.Especially niche, cutting edge topics.
But I understand that fewer comments is much easier to police, so reducing opportunities for comments to even be made, feels like progress to an already overtaxes moderation workforce.
I just wanted to highlight how many discussion are silently not happening because of this destructive policy.
Permanently terminating all discussion regarding the MA5671A SFP, one of the very option to run a openwrt router on direct GPON.
Do you really think that this was the last word anyone ever had to say about it in the last two years.
Because I think that anyone saw the closed thread and simply did not bother to fight the system.
Because, even if you do create a new MA5671A, it will probably be years before it makes it to the google front page again. By which time, it will certainly have been closed unless you could somehow manage never to have a 10-day silent streak, which is unlikely, and therefore there is not really a point to make a new thread and that's why no one did.

Which only got one answer by lleachii, who did not have the specialist knowledge necessary to interpret the question. Because the "openwrt MA5671A community" exists only in that other thread and that thread was closed without so much as a recapitulation of the important facts, it literally ends on a question !
I understand that the orthodox answer regarding using openwrt on GPON is that you don't.
This thread was coming up with a better answer, until it was shut down.
And how many other such threads about niche topics are also closed like that because nobody posted a bump in 10 days ?
I would recommend bulk unlocking all thread and seeing what google tops hits start flowering again.
Find all threads getting more than 2 visits per months from all search engines for 2 consecutive months (real user visits not search engine spiders)
Of those threads, analyze text, determine if there is any possible questions or things to add those visitors might have.
then unlock those threads so we can see if those search engine users have anything to say or ask.
I mean, if you unlock a thread and nobody says anything. It doesn't make any difference right ?
And is there any other reason to lockdown all those threads other than for the comfort of people who browser /c/category/ in chronological order ?
Would any other users even notice ?
I personally, never look at "latest post by chronological order".
Or maybe, instead of locking a thread, shutting down discussion forever, just have a "silence" status to a thread, where a silenced thread just doesn't get bumped into the forum category chronological view unless you tick "show silenced threads" ?

I was being kind to a new user, whom BTW has never made another post - not even to answer the question. I might add, you haven't responded either. From your discussion, it's clear you disagree or failed to consider - that I identified the OS as some fork of OpenWrt. Your thread confirmed that notion. I admit I was ignorant of the original thread at the time of my response. Had I known, I may have referred the OP there as rationale supporting thier post was regarding a non-OpenWrt device.
Although, I see the usefulness a GPON to Ethernet SFP such as this running OpenWrt, it wouldn't be very common in the US, but I for one would love to locate one and test.

Additionally, you provided a link to an unlocked thread. As you say: "if those search engine users have anything to say or ask" then why haven't they replied to the currently open thread?

He, might* have gotten it opened or told to migrate it a to DM 'room' but just ended up letting mods let off steam.
