Pfsense + OpenWrt (is it overkill?)

Hi there, so I have been doing some side research on getting my home network more secure but also expanding my over wireless routers.

In my current setup - I have a Pfsense router set up that has separated interfaces for my network (e.g. IoT, Security Cameras, LAN, etc). I will be wanted to add the TUF 4200 with OpenWRT as a main AP in the house and it will have VLANs to accept wireless clients however it will be assigned by the pfsense box.

I am looking at the community to weigh in if you have any experience and what would be the pros and cons of it.

Thank you.

Yes, it is OP., if you have cabling you can buy 2..5 smaller devices, like ax53u, or glinet or cudy.Or one now and other for wifi7 in few years?

https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_16128_ax-wifi

have You consider cudy ap3000 ? openwrt will be soon available for it, or some othe nice ap's . i lso have pfsense as main firewall /gateway for like almost 10 years and never had any problems with traffic etc. now i want to try again opnsense because of more frequent updates.

Well I can get the TUF 4200 for relatively at a good price approx 100 CAD and my pfsense has been working with my R7000 so I am seeing if I can increase my wifi range in the home.

I guess this is a good approach. Hoping I can install successfully the TUF 4200

Go for it, price is half from EU price

Do it  and report about how it work for You.

I've found pfsense to be maddening compared to being able to configure with command line etc in openwrt. Plus easy uci-defaults and the image builder etc. I also like having a different running config vs saved config etc. Plus actual config files you can backup rather than dealing with XML.

I'd be interested in learning your opinion on trying openwrt for your AP's. I much rather my AP's running openwrt than any of the other options. I would highly encourage trying this out yes.

IDK what the consensus here is on one big AP vs a bunch of cheaper AP's spread out over a larger area. I did get a big range/speed boost when going from a 2x2 to a newer 4x4 ap. But i still achieved better overall performance going for multiple AP's and a wired backhaul.

Ok folks wish me luck I am going for this router TUF 4200 and installing OpenWRT. I will keep folks posted on my findings. Thanks all.

Where can I find information about this? Searched a bit but didn't see any one working on it.
