Especially for UBI layout firmwares. Why? Because I've found a better way to return to stock firmware on UBI layout images. And this package is NEEDED! You can read restore to stock section of this: https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/23211
This method works better than all return to stock methods for UBI firmwares. It's significantly faster and easier to do this. Just do this because this stupid clawd bot is bugging me about why I gave a drive link, what else I was supposed to do? It's driving me nuts.
You can add kmod-mtd-rw once the initramfs image has finished booting, there is no need to have it included. See e.g. the instructions for the Zyxel T-56: https://openwrt.org/toh/zyxel/t-56#installation (scroll down a bit or search for mtd-rw). I never tested it, but it looks viable.
Well you need to connect it to the internet, way too much work. With that you could just repartition easily. A random guy would know to not mess around mtd partitions anyway.
If you want to personalize/ modify the initramfs image, you can do that (and I can imagine more than half a dozen ways to accomplish that) - it's your personal pet peeve, not something everyone else needs.
