Personal Wifi From Public Wifi

Hello Everyone,

I have a question about open WRT, and I'm not sure if its possible to even do this or not.

I recently accepted a position where I need to travel alot for work. And there are very few hotels that have network cables anymore. I think I found one that still had it run, out of like 5 so far this year. Everyone is now using wifi for their guests.

So I picked up a portable router running open WRT. I wanted to ask if WRT could actually get its internet from a public wifi, then put out its own wifi signal for my use. I'd keep it low power ofc, just enough to cover the hotel room.

Then, once it has its own wifi broadcasting out, run all its data through a VPN.

Not sure if this helps, but I got a GL Inet GL-MT300N-V2. I have a much older portable router, but its over 10 years old now. So I don't think its capable of doing what I'd like it to do.

Look at the Travelmate Package.

Yes, this is very easy to do with OpenWrt. There is even a great package to make this whole process easier.

Your MT300-v2 is quite and you may want to look at newer, more capable hardware. But you can get started with that device. There are many travel routers that are well supported... most popular appear to be the GL-inet MT3000 and the Cudy TR3000, but there are tons to choose from.

Main problems with the MT300 are its slow CPU and 2.4 only wifi. But it can do the use case you propose, it just won't be fast.

You can, use Travelmate as suggested. The Wi-Fi<->Wi-Fi bridge will be a little slow, but in your case the limited factor will be the VPN anyway (because of the CPU). With that setup you should get a little over 30mbps through WireGuard.
