Orbi rbr50 boot loop. data abort

Hi,

Several weeks ago my orbi router went into a boot loop after a manual restart from the web administration UI. I tried severals things that didn't help recover but I can't just give up on it.

So I've opened the router, found the serial pin on the motherboard and bought a USB-serial cable. Now I can access to the bootloader console but I lack knowledge on this.

I havent installed openWRT on my orbi, which is not in the supported device I've found on the website anyway, but according to the logs, the orbi firmware is based on openWRT. So I decided to try to get some help here.

I managed to confirmed that firmware upload with tftp works well. However everytime it boots, it ends up with a "data abord" followed by a reset.

I executed the bootcmd manually and I've confirmed that the "data abord" is issued by the "bootm 0x84000000".

Any help would be appreciated.

Take a look at Netgear Orbi RBR50 build? and Netgear Orbi Pro support-booting from MMC

There seems to be some kind of OpenWrt support on the way.
You could try to build an OpenWrt image and then flash that in order to see if flashing works with OpenWrt instead of OEM image.

Thanks, I'll have a look at thoses posts.
But I don't think I'm up to the task if it comes to build my own image, never done that... :roll_eyes: :cold_sweat:

Netgear uses an older, heavily tailored OpenWrt version for their own firmware images. If you want support for that (which is what you are running: stock vendor firmware), you'll need to talk to them.

Thanks for your reply. However Netgear support doesn't help. Actually I've discovered that Netgear support is free only for 3 months after the purchase. After that you need to pay... And since the router is not under warranty anymore, they won't do anything. I haven't been able to get help from the Netgear forum/community either. That's why I tried my luck here when I found mention of openWRT in the boot log...

Since I get the "data abord" whatever the version of the Netgear firmware I flash, I'm trying to find out if this is a hardware failure and I can't do anything or if this is a software issue that can be fixed from the u-boot console. It's hard to let go when you paid about $700 a bit more than a year ago...

That sucks - sorry to hear. So the Netgear recovery procedure isn't helping either?

You don't happen to be in the EU do you? Legal warranty in the EU is 2 years, even if the manufacturer or seller pretends otherwise.

The netgear procedure doesn't help. While the firmware flashing seems successful, the router won't boot whatever firmware I tried.

No I'm not in the UE.

Is there a way to test your flash for integrity from the Uboot console?

I think that's what check_dni_image command do and the result seems OK
