That download speed still looks low and in line with the Minstrel patched test results? Personally I am still seeing a rather large regression. This is one of your earlier messages:
Test tool is iperf3.
First test is download from desktop with 2.4G wifi
minstrel patched desktop command notebook command bandwidth
yes iperf3 -c 192.168.3.170 -i 1 -t 30 iperf3 -s 43.7 Mbits/sec

This test is running iperf3 on a PC(OS is Win10), not the router. So it's much faster than on router.
After that I tested iperf3 on the router, and downloading speed is around 40Mbits/sec, so the speed is regression.

Ok, that's good in the sense that we're seeing the same regression I thought it was only my device that was affected. @nbd it looks like the regression is still there unfortunately.

Am I correct in assuming I need to remove:
371-373 and 375-376 in reverse order? Just double checking

Testing results are in, and it seems that you are right with your suspicion that the regression from patch 327 is gone. Below are my testing results. I've averaged each measurement over 5 runs and rounded up/down to the nearest mod 5 number:

So it seems like the regression is present in 373-mac80211-minstrel-fix-using-short-preamble-CCK-rates.patch
Edit: For reference, all these tests were done on channel 1 with a 20mhz channel width, since that tends to give me to most stable / reproducible results.

Seems another strange thing happened. I tested 2 huawei mobile phones, one is honor 6X with 2.4g single band, another is honor 9 with 2.4g & 5g dual bands. The honor 6X can get 150Mhz 2.4g connection, but the honor 9 can only get 52~72mhz 2.4g connection. My notebook with Intel wireless 3160 can also get 150Mhz.
Another notebook with Atheros AR9485 wireless card is OK. So maybe this is a driver bug of honor 9, I can't sure.

Regarding the difference in rate between devices: some devices disable HT40 in 2.4 GHz. This makes sense in many cases because one HT40 channel is covering most of the available spectrum in that band, so it sends and picks up more interference.

From what I can see, the main effective difference between your rate stats and mine is the fact that on your link, CCK rates are not 100% reliable, which causes them to be sampled more frequently.
I think this increases the airtime usage and reduces throughput as well. Patch 373 was the one that restored the availability of CCK rates in the first place, so it's normal for it to show up as the source of the regression.
I've pushed another fix that should prevent CCK rates from getting sampled unnecessarily. Please test.

I am not at home, so I cannot test at the moment. I hope to be able to run some tests tomorrow. I am curious though how the CCK rates can be so unreliable, even though higher HT rates are perfectly reliable. Is there a good explanation for that? Trying to learn something about the inner workings of WiFi as well if possible Thank you very much for the patch by the way!

With your latest patch I get more throughput on the 5 GHz band (137 Mbits/sec vs 105 in a previous build) without the weird drops in performance I observed earlier.

I should have used iperf3 throughout my previous tests, because it is easier to control and verify. However, my previous tests were done on dslreports and the site is currently down, so I cannot do a 1:1 comparison. However, my iperf3 tests are inline with pre-regression speeds, so it seems to be fixed I'll double check on dslreports once it is back up. Thank you very much again for your amazing work.
If you need help with testing with your investigation why CCK rates are unreliable, please let me know and I'll be happy to run tests

@nbd The latest master build (without the new mt76 commit to keep that the same) I am getting 80 mbit download and 65 mbit upload with the same testing setup as earlier, so the regression is definitely gone Great job!

Performance is back up with your latest commit but it is a bit weird. These numbers are the end result of my simple test on the 5 GHz band (laptop client connecting to iperf3 on router, letting it run for 60 seconds) and are a bit all over the place: 51.1, 84.1, 98.4, 97.8 and 65.4 Mbits/sec. If I look at my results on a second by second basis it seems that sometimes the transfer dips (ie from 100 to 50 Mbits/sec) or even chokes (0.00 Mbits/sec) but then it ramps up again to normal speeds.
Are you still running into 5ghz performance weirdness? I ran into performance issues as well, but they aren't easy to reproduce, hence I didn't saw them earlier. The first time when I was testing the Minstrel patches by removing them one by one. It had poor performance when all patches were removed, so it wasn't caused by the Minstrel patches. And now I'm seeing performance issues on my latest master build as well. 1-2s latencies and sub 10mbit speeds in either direction. Two different clients (both Android phones) are showing the same behavior. I am suspecting a mt76 regression somewhere.
The weird thing is, is that performance is completely fine sometimes. Those 300 mbit download / 500 mbit upload were seen on the same client on the same build. Some observations I have made:
Disconnecting WiFi on phone and reconnecting it does not fix the speeds
Rebooting the phone does not fix the speeds
Running the "wifi" command on the router does not fix the speeds.

@Bartvz if you have any experiences / observations to add, please let me know And @nbd , do you happen to know what could be causing this and how I can pinpoint the issue? I'm terribly sorry for coming back with new issues all the time. Hopefully the rigorous testing is appreciated

It also starts after 5ghz has been running for a while, I'm also seeing 1000-2000ms pings and high packet loss and a router reboot is also required to bring the speed back to pristine state.
