OpenWrt's verification of contributors' real names

Your contributor guidelines documentation make it clear that contributors must use their real name in git sign-offs. GitHub have no ID verification procedure in their account opening process and many git users use a pseudonym handle or fake name in their config. What process does OpenWrt use to verify that the name associated with every commit sign-off is the contributor's actual real name?

Vibes. Quite literally. If a contributor is unknown, then they are encouraged to use their "real" name. You need some kind of a developer karma for your contributions to be accepted. I'm personally wary of contributors with new, empty, or hidden GH profiles. On the other hand, if it's a known contributor then it's more relaxed. However most known contributors use some kind of known stable real-looking name.

What kind of process do you expect?

Weary or Wary?

Wary. Fat fingered

Well I have not encountered this requirement anywhere else in an open source project, so I didn't know what to expect. I assumed there must be a process, as otherwise what is the point of the policy if a contributor can simply provide a fake 'real name'? If "vibes" is truly the extent of it, how does one go about suggesting this policy be dropped?

I’ll point you here.

Become a regular contributor and generate sufficient credibility with the community, then you may be able to suggest it without being dismissed out of hand.

This has long history, and has been discussed extensively on the -devel mail list. I think this is the most recent one, but there have been others that you can dig out: https://lists.openwrt.org/pipermail/openwrt-devel/2024-June/042959.html

Thanks @efahl. That's kind of a Catch 22 for me as I am not willing to associate my real name with my GitHub account (spam & general privacy concerns). I am thus barred from contributing.

I fully respect OpenWrt's rules, I was merely suggesting that this one made no sense, as I could easily contribute by cheating and providing a fake name.

I'll mark this question as solved anyhow, thanks all for your input.

Just my two cents as a German citizen.

Germany copyright laws do not allow to transfer ownership. It only allows to delegate rights of usage.
So just from my standpoint you actually need to state your real name anyhow to "comply" with the law. Sure you can use a pseudonym but as soon as questions are asked about the authorship you need to state your real id anyway.

I know it does not relate to the real name policy of OpenWrt directly but maybe gives some hints that all these laws and policies regarding copyright are quiet complex.
