I’m a beginner looking to install OpenWrt on my Linksys WRT1900ACS, and I’d appreciate your advice on the most stable version for my needs.
My primary goal is to use OpenWrt to connect to my home WireGuard VPN. Stability is my top priority, as I want a reliable setup without frequent issues or bugs.
Here’s a bit more about my situation:
Router : Linksys WRT1900ACS
Use Case : Primarily for WireGuard VPN connectivity.
Experience Level : Beginner (this is my first time using OpenWrt).
Preferences :
The most stable version possible with no critical / fatal issues for my router.
Good WiFi stability (I’ve heard the Marvell driver can be tricky).
I’ve read about OpenWrt 21.02.x (LTS) and 22.03.x, but I’m unsure which one would be the best fit for my needs. I’m also open to any tips or guides for setting up WireGuard on the recommended version.
Thank you in advance for your help! I’m excited to join the OpenWrt community and look forward to your recommendations.
i've read on reddit that there were some bugs but i'm a beginer into this that's why i asked overhere. Do you recommand this latest stable release for wrt1900acs ?
Yes. The only supported version is 23.05 (or newer; 24.10.0 is currently in RC stage). 22.03 and earlier are EOL and unsupported. They have security vulnerabilities that will never be patched. Therefore, unless there is a serious bug related to the latest (23.05) for your specific device, you should be running the current and supported firmware.
Best would be 24.10 rc4 or later where firewall software flow offload finally works. Please post link¡ to your sources with precise problem descriptions.
i don't have a problem i'm looking for an advice on which one should i install , it's now running on stock firmware and want to just make sure am using a good and stable release for my router
24.10 rc-has/release-will-have working soft offload, on 23.05 it just stops forwarding packets when offload is enabled (luci and dhcp stays working, just no internet browsing). Soft offload means 2-3x better forwarding speeds.
wifi is very limited - first relatively low power, very few 5GHz channels, does not change with versions
