OpenWrt Support for D-Link DAP-X1860

I flashed just now and came across the same problem. Used openwrt-ramips-mt7621-dlink_dap-x1860-a1-squashfs-factory.bin from https://github.com/RolandoMagico/openwrt/releases/tag/Build_2022-12-22, which i renamed to "factory.bin". Followed these instructions: OpenWrt Support for D-Link DAP-X1860 - #69 by dKoco, except that I first tried to use it with Firefox. When I did so, i encountered the 1259 Bytes problem (the file should be way bigger!). Then I tried the same with Microsoft Edge and it showed a file size that I deemed more accurate (but I did not crosscheck), so I flashed and it worked just like described in instructions. I am not completely sure if using Microsoft Edge fixed it, or if it was a timing issue.

I used DAP-X1860_RevA_Firmware_101b94.bin, thanks for the help, i was now able to get back to stock using this technique described in the pull request you mentioned. I needed to flash it twice for some reason to work. For the OpenWRT, i tried your posted file from OpenWrt Support for D-Link DAP-X1860 - #62 by RolandoMagico and the last 2 releases from your github repo (2022-12-19 and 2022-12-22). Name: openwrt-ramips-mt7621-dlink_dap-x1860-a1-squashfs-factory.bin
I do have serial access but im not sure how to flash it using serial

I tried Edge again now a few times, didn't helped me on OpenWRT files but with the extracted stock fw file it worked to flash on Edge, but same <1301 Bytes problem on Firefox. So it seems to has something to do with browser. I tried another computer but that didn't help. Maybe its only a small thing that makes the difference which makes it work for you but not for me. For some reason different filename of the same file means also different byte size showed in Firefox,(but alway < 1301 Bytes), really strange behaviour of this WebGUI...

I also noticed there is telnet access possible on stock firmware. I'm not familiar with telnet, only SSH so I dont know how to get any benefit of that (flash OpenWRT somehow maybe)

I don’t know if flashing via serial is possible in general, but can you provide the serial boot log after flashing openwrt fails?

I have never used telnet before, but are we not lucky to have access to knowledge from our ancestors?!
Found a couple other OpenWRT devices that use telnet as flash method. For example: How to flash via telnet for Netgear 6220. Maybe a similar method will work here as well?

There are a multitude of other flash methods one could try as well, of course not all may work.

Anyway, with great joy I can announce that Rolandos Image from 2022-12-22, works pretty well!

The best news first:

  1. OpenWRT has higher range than stock firmware. Whereas with stock firmware I had a location in my house (behind two walls and far distance), where my phone constantly lost connection to the repeater (I assume it was because stock firmware automatically tries to switch between 2.4G and 5G, when low signal strength is detected), now with OpenWRT, there are no connection issues at all when I am with my phone in this specific location. I simply configured two separate wifi SSIDs (one for 2.4G(ax) and one for 5G(ax) and my phone only connects to one of them (roaming disabled). It is rock stable. I was able to switch from 144p to 720p youtube video quality :smiley:

  2. Low amount of laggs. I was playing computer games (Heroes of the Storm from Blizzard) yesterday for a few hours and had zero laggs. (At this specific location, I rarely had laggs with Stock firmware either, so actually no change here). Client is located behind two walls. It is the location from my iperf3 measurements down below.

The bad news:

  • Speeds in certain distance ranges are lower than stock OEM (but for me that is ok, since I gain control over configuration, (hopefully) more stability, increased range and the potential for future improvements in OpenWRT)

Here a glimpse of my Iperf3 measurements:

Remarks about iperf3 measurements and experiences with varying number of client streams:

  • Higher number of client streams seems to have low impact on maximum achieved bandwidth, (that is the achieved sum of adding all client streams bandwidth together)
  • with 8 streams, OpenWRT performance with bidirectional tests is roughly comparable to stock OEM, but OpenWRT has LESS retries (In one of my tests, OpenWRT had 20-50, whereas Stock OEM had 800-1300). Though, Stock OEM performs a lot better in simple non bi-directional tcp tests, regardless of number of client streams.
  • Many client streams lead to whacky performance (Similar on both stock OEM and OpenWRT), as a higher number of clients has a very strong impact on median speed and standard deviation. Speed per stream varies wildly. Speed per stream varies especially for RX-C. TX-C is more stable. Some streams can capture full speed, whereas the speed of other clients drops rapidly in comparison. There seems to be no bandwidth fairness or alternative system in place to keep these fluctuations in check.

The Mediatek Bootloader Recovery system indeed causes issues with Firefox, this was also observed with other Mediatek devices (e.g. from Wavlink).

And it is true that D-Link does not offer a recovery image that would work for this device (usually called MiddleFirmware with the German support), but as it was already mentioned, this can be converted as described in the commit message.

Maybe that's one of the reasons they want to get rid of them, besides the incorrect LED population (orange instead of green) for status and rssi low.

Today my D-Link dap-x1860 using OpenWRT RolandoMagico release 2022-12-22 failed. My clients (both computer and mobile phone) suddenly lost wifi connection. Until today it was all working very well.

  • Tried to reconnect: failed to reconnect. Sporadically connected, but failed to connect to internet
  • Tried to restart main router and restart D-Link dap-x1860: Connected to dap-x1860, but failed to connect to internet.
  • Checked main router to see if D-Link dap-x1860 is connected: Was NOT connected.

To conclude: It was working, I have not changed any configuration, then suddenly the connection was not working anymore, hence this looks like a bug. Still cannot reconnect. Posting this for documentation. Will connect via cable to check OpenWRT config soon. Maybe I find some error messages / logs.

(My setup: Clients (e.g. intel ax200) ← wifi 802.11ax ch40 80MHz, 2 walls → D-Link-dap-x1860 (configured as repeater using relayd) ← wifi 802.11ac ch40 80MHz (1 wall) → Fritzbox 7490 OEM ← internet)

Got some logs. Was only able to access Luci UI interface via wifi from one of my clients, after I connected the dap-x1860 via Gigabit Lan cable to my Fritzbox 7490 (client ← wifi → D-Link-dap-x1860 ← lan → Fritzbox 7490) Before that I was trying to gain access to Luci via lan cable from client to dap-x1860 with manually configured IP and also via wifi, but both methods failed (but i think this is caused by my configuration)

Yes, it seems to be the same Error. I tried flashing initramfs initially before writing here but i cant flash anything through that WebGUI except for the extracted Stock Image

For the problem, i have really no clue why i cant flash it but others can. Never had this issues with any device but thats the reason why its in dev-state right now, right...
Maybe its looking for a magic number or checksum i really dont know.
Since i tried different Browsers and even another PC and all its a bit weird but I think I probably need to try another flash method.

Maybe im able to flash with a TFTP Server or via Serial through U-Boot, it seems theres a option according to the posted OEM Bootlog. Shell input should (maybe) be unlocked through a specific key like pressing spacebar or something(according to my researches), at the right moment. Well im not a experienced linux or openwrt person, just a regular user but if i find time for it i may try it in a few days.

Just to confirm this: When you try to flash initramfs via Recovery, with a browser other than Firefox (e.g. Chromium, Edge, Vivaldi,...), the flash procedure would work, but the device reboots into recovery again? Or is it the same 1301 bytes error as with Firefox?

I think the different checksums are due to the recovery being customized by D-Link, which also unpacks the ELX image (maybe the hash is calculated over the full memory dump of the upload, including the multipart boundary separators, which are randomized by the browser; regarding the file size, this is also parsed from a header, I'd have to check what the uploaded form data looks like with Firefox, maybe they format something different, which makes the parser fail). This upload header also contains the filename, which is probably why it's not always the same length.

If you are using Windows, the old (and hidden) IE11 might be worth trying, for some older D-Link devices this is now the only way to flash them that works for me, not even curl works on Linux anymore, so it must be something related to the Linux TCP/IP stack I suppose... But DAP-X1860 was still working with Linux and Chromium so far.

It's been a while since the last time I used initramfs on this device, and I think I also did it manually with uboot commands back then (tftpboot followed by bootm or something). Even though the Recovery will accept (and flash) images with the 0x27051956 header, I'm not quite sure anymore if this would boot, but technically the image found in the flash after flashing does not contain the ELX header anymore.

I don't have a device and/or build system with me over the holidays, I could only try by the end of next week.
@RolandoMagico or others, has someone tried actually writing initramfs to flash, rather than directly booting via tftp? Maybe it could indeed help to add the | elx-header recipe for building a flashable initramfs image.

When initramfs boots, this should be visible by the LED sequence, and you could try to erase mtd4 as described earlier, if that is the issue (but I think it only was initially, when nmbm was not yet used in the kernel).

@s_2 : You mean downloading initramfs via the recovery interface? I tried it with one of my devices, download seems to work in general but after reset, I'm in recovery mode again automatically without pressing the reset button during power on. Power LED is blinking slowly in this case.
Afterwards, I'm able to download the factory image openwrt-ramips-mt7621-dlink_dap-x1860-a1-squashfs-factory.bin successfully and OpenWrt is started afterwards.

@SPI-Flasher I can build an initramfs image with the elx-header appended next week, and see if this works on my device. This should allow you to format the mtd4 partition manually before flashing the real Openwrt image, assuming your device has the same problem with the NAND when expanding rootfs on first boot.
