OpenWRT One and PoE?

Can anyone explain how the PoE function is used with the OpenWRT One?
I note that there two Ethernet RJ45's. One labelled LAN (with no PoE legend) and the other WAN (with a PoE legend).

Can I power the "One" via the LAN port connected to my Netgear GS308EP (PoE+). If so, do I need the optional PoE module for the "One"?

Thank you for your comments.

  1. Yes, I spent the weekend searching this forum and many others.
  2. Having re-read the link you point to, I don't think that answers my question. It spends most of later part of the thread discussing setting up Dumb AP's.

Q. 1 Can I power the OpenWRT via the LAN port? If so, how? In that thread, there are comments on swapping the LAN/WAN ports but is that in relation to data facing or what...?

in relation to powering it through the LAN port ...

openwrt, doesn't care which port you assign as WAN and LAN.

Only the port labelled 'wan' is PoE capable, but as frollic said, switching the functionality around between lan/ wan assignments is a two-line change in /etc/config/network.

So...

  1. I swap the LAN/WAN ports via changes in /etc/config/network.
  2. I connect my PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment^) switch to the OpenWRT One WAN port. As the OpenWRT One WAN port is a PD (Powered Device), it will power-up.
  3. I connect the OpenWRT LAN port to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal).

Have I got it right?

You only forgot the part involving a sharpie and a piece of tape, to label the new port assignment on the case.
