Hello. I have an idea of building a wireless mesh network for voice communication while riding an enduro bike with my friends. I already have a core router which runs a Mumble server and works great (xiaomi 3000T board in a sealed plastic box ), but i'd like to add some other nodes to extend wireless network and improove snr.
At first I was going to use another 3000T as a mesh node, but now i'm thinking of some smoller boards. Maybe "orange pi zero 2w" will work, or " Orange Pi Zero 3"?
I've made a serch and found out that there is a problem with wireless driver of these boards.
Could you advice any small board that will fit my needs?
Dont expect wifi to inch past 25m/30yd, also it is tuned for walking speeds.
But it already works far more than that. No speed problem. The only thing is that it's better to use a wired headset not a blootooth
You can use outdoor APs on outer cornets, PoE fed.
GL-AR750 or similar ?
I gues it's a nice small router. Yes, something like that
GL.iNet have several of those, size wise, have a look at their other devices.
Is there a Mumble server/client for OpenWrt?
@brada4 is kind of correct, but the walking speed thing is actually "relative velocity".
ie You could be doing mach 10 and it will still work as long as the relative velocity between members of the group is no greater than "~ walking pace".
Range in open country could be 1Km, particularly if you use 2.4GHz band, but road traffic and/or buildings can very rapidly reduce the range to 25m or less.
I have used the GL-MT300N-V2 with a usb wired headset for similar purposes. It is usb powered, and has great 2.4GHz range with its built in antennas (built into a small plastic box and powered by a small usb power pack)
Yes there is a mumble server for openwrt, it's called umurmur, the client is an android phone
But there is a catch. when an android phone looses connection and than reconnects it's mac-address chanches the phone gets another ip-address and mumble client does not reconnects. To use that idea you should turn off mac-chaiging (don't remember the correct mane of that feature)
If I use one router without mesh, the phone connects at about 400m. I think if I will use another router as a repeater (mesh-node) it will cover more distance for my phone and for other possible companions
Does it support mesh featurs? Is there enough memory to install packages?
