openwrt is just an OS that has iptables. Since you aren't using it in its intended way, you'll have to provide custom iptables to do what you want. It can do anything that iptables can do. It'll be up to you to do it correctly.

You're not going to lower maintence, rather increase it because of what OpenWrt targets.
