[openwrt 19] for Linksys X1000 (please dont kill that topic/hardware)

hello

as another little oldie (not that old), and because there are still persons reviving them, just "refuses to die".. here it is for the linksys x1000

you can use the official archive.openwrt.org to get the image :
no link will appear on that thread, looks like admins hates this.

here it is, for various purposes, eg replace the original firmware or just educational ones :slight_smile:

  1. specs :
    cpu : BCM63281T@320mhz
    flash : 8MB
    RAM: 16MB
    works on : openwrt 19 and more recent

  2. installation

linksys X1000

  1. save your original firmware's configuration
  2. poweroff and unplug your router
  3. push 10secs the reset rear button while power it back on
  4. the power LED should be red
  5. get fixed IPaddr 192.168.1.XX and go to 192.168.1.1
  6. upload openwrt-brcm63xx-generic-96328avng-generic-squashfs-cfe-8M.bin
  7. validate and let the router process ; computer could loss it's ipaddr, dont hesitate to apply back the ipaddr to the ethernet card
  8. until done, reboot the router

Where exactly is the official link to the image? I looked and I could not find it. I also cannot find any evidence that that this device was ever officially supported by OpenWrt.

16MB RAM is insufficient to use anything more recent than 19.07, and IIRC 16MB is not even sufficient for that version. 64MB has been required since 21.02.

To be clear -- 19.07 has been EOL and unsupported for many years already. It has many known serious security vulnerabilities and should not be used anymore.

There is little-to-no educational value value in using an obsolete version of OpenWrt on hardware that is barely capable of running it. The modern syntax is considerably different when comparing against old versions like 19.07, and therefore stuff learned on old versions would need to be relearned. Further, there will be no practical way to run additional packages since there isn't enough RAM to run even the core OS properly.

Please clarify how you think that this thread (and using this old device with an obsolete version of OpenWrt) has educational value?

Support for 16 MB RAM devices has been formally discontinued with 12.09, and that was well after the fact of this having become untenable for quite a while already - that was twelve years ago. Beyond that, bcm63xx support has always been rather basic, no xDSL/ cable modem drivers, no phone (FXS/ DECT/ ISDN) drivers, barely any wireless support (and even loading b43 will make 16 MB RAM devices go OOM).

Based on the additional technical information provided by @slh , I see no way that this device could possibly have been officially supported in any OpenWrt version since 12.09.

As such, this thread will be closed because this device is beyond obsolete and clearly unsupported. Anybody who wishes to even attempt using this device should understand that they are entirely on their own and should also assume that the device (and thus their network) is likely to be compromised immeidately.
