Nuage Networks 7850 NSG-E200 hardware discovery

Bought one of these on ebay UK recently. Industrial 6 port x64 router / firewall. Specs are listed below:

  • Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C2558 @ 2.40GHz
  • 4GB ddr3 memory with a 2nd slot free
  • 16 GB ssd boot drive
  • 6x GB ethernet ports of which 2 are also sfp's
  • 1x usb 2.0 port
  • console port
  • m.2 slot
  • mini pcie slot
  • small fan

Both the bios and the stock system are password protected and even after resetting the unit I couldn't figure out a way in. The original firmware is based on CentOS 7 and seems to expect to get configured automatically over the network. The system tries to boot of the ssd drive first which makes the OpenWrt install a bit more tricky. Removing the ssd drive allows the system to boot into OpenWrt from USB drive. Installing the ssd while OpenWrt is running from USB does allow it to be recognised. This makes it possible to dd the openwrt-x64-efi-ext4.img to the ssd drive. Power off the unit, remove the USB drive and a reboot results in OpenWrt running from the ssd drive. Fan noise is very loud during start up but then drops to an acceptable low level after a minute or so. I don't have any way to test the SFP ports unfortunately. Overall a solid built unit which is massive overkill for my FTTC VDSL connection however I couldn't resist for the very reasonable buy it now price.

OpenWrt bootlog and some images below.

So how much $ was it shipped?

It was listed for £40 including postage but got a 10% cyber monday discount from ebay so ended up paying £36.

There are a few similar Nuage Networks devices listed on ebay UK at the moment but at a slightly higher price.

Hello! Please describe in detail how you installed openwrt on this device. How did you bypass the write protection of the ssd?

I removed the SSD and booted OpenWrt from USB. Then I re-installed the SSD while OpenWrt was running. OpenWrt recognised the drive so I wrote the firmware to the SSD and rebooted with the USB removed.

I don't think adding a SSD to a working system is a good idea and I would recommend to put the SSD in an USB enclosure and use a different computer to write the firmware to the SSD.

I didn't have an enclosure at the time and decided to take the risk and install the SSD on a working system.

Have you removed the jumper on the SSD? Don't know what it's for?

I don't think I removed / changed any jumpers. I couldn't get into the bios and it always tries to boot from SSD and then try to download its configuration from the internet. By removing the SSD and not having a working network it seems to fall back to USB which then makes it possible to boot OpenWrt.

I can open mine and see what position the jumper is in if that helps?

The PC cannot access the SSD... It cannot be erased or copied directly. I do not have documentation for the device. I searched the entire Internet. I act by intuition)))

Does the device boot successfully on the original firmware?

I guess the easiest option is to either run OpenWrt from USB or buy another m.2 sata SSD and use that instead.

Yes, boot. I may erase ssd with HDD low level format. But maybe ssd have harware secure in firmware. Thanks for help!

Hmm, Advantek SSDs are very specific, I had to use a bunch of software...
Have you tried installing any Wi-Fi module into this device?

No I've got separate access points for wifi which in general performs better than adding wifi cards.

How were you able to enter the BIOS and see the BIOS? It looks like the pci work is locked into the BIOS... It’s just that the device doesn’t see the Wi-Fi modules (((

I've not been able to enter the bios so don't know how to get those to work.

As I understand it, you saw the loading screen because you write that the BIOS has a password? How to do this? or did I misunderstand you?

You need to connect serial console and keep hitting the 'del' key from the moment you switch the power on. This will get you a login screen before you can enter the bios. I have tried a few random guesses but not been able to enter the actual bios.

I'm pretty sure the nuage networks 7850 is a rebranded Advantech FWA-1010VC. On the Advantech website there are product data sheets and manuals. The manual shows that the CMOS can be cleared by moving jumper JP1. However when I try that on my device the bios password is still active. Unfortunately there are no bios files on their website so it is not possible to flash an new unlocked bios with an external programmer.

aida64 report hardware https://drive.google.com/file/d/14pyClDH6M273CsoVdfwFCiA6Efy_yjtJ/view?usp=sharing. Yes, pci-e is off. I will try dump bios and edit it.
