Modules are by their very nature, well, modular. So not included by default unless another compiled in package needs them as a dependency.
The command I use to build my own image for a netgear wndr3700:
make image PROFILE=wndr3700 PACKAGES="-dnsmasq -odhcpd-ipv6only -ppp -ppp-mod-pppoe 6in4 block-mount ip6tables-extra kmod-fs-ext4 kmod-fs-msdos kmod-fs-ntfs kmod-fs-vfat kmod-nls-iso8859-15 kmod-usb-storage luci luci-app-unbound luci-ssl odhcpd unbound unbound-control" EXTRA_IMAGE_NAME="donk-2020-06-02-1550" FILES=../files/
I maked the ath10 modules with (*) instead of (M) in make menuconfig and this resulted in the modules being added to packages:
opkg list-installed | grep kmod-ath

So now I am trying to build the firmware the same way.
@DONKZZZ thanks I will try later on. I like the idea of recompiling everything. Once my configure profile is done, I can reuse it with later builds. So it does not really matter to compile, it only takes longer.
I built a new firmware and installed it. The 5ghz wifi still does not work. It is seen by system, but does not work. The 2,4 Ghz works well.
I compiled with make -j4. Sometimes it makes errors. Maybe I should recompile with make?
How to perform further testing?

This time I recompiled everything with "make" and not "make -j4" and removed my wireless network configuration to recreate it ... and it worked. Wifi AC is working. So marking this thread as "Fixed". Thanks for the help.
