No space left on device

I'm new in openWRT but I have a dream: migrate my ubiquity wireless network to openWRT/openWisp in a way I can use multiple brand devices but with the same openWRT firmware and managed centrally using openWisp.

As a test purpose I've installed openWRT on an old netgear wndr3700 v1. I would like to configure 2 SSID, one with radius authentication and the other with guest portal and client isolation.

I followed this guide[¹] to configure the router in bridge mode. All seems to works. Now I would like to secure the wireless authentication using freeradius-default but when I try to install it I get the error:

  • pkg_write_filelist: Failed to open //usr/lib/opkg/info/libopenssl3.list: No space left on device.

I have to uninstall some package to make room? Please can you suggest me which packages I can uninstall to room space for freeradius authentication?

Best regards

Piviul

since your router is limited to 8Mb of flash, you will either have to change routers or start from scratch and use:

you can remove packages you don't need, and add the ones you do need, by using online image builder, and gain some space.

https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org/?version=23.05.3&target=ath79%2Fgeneric&id=netgear_wndr3700

click the tiny arrow, and put a - (minus) in front of the packages you don't want (like the ppp packages).

Many thank... but reinstalling from scratch using a custom build image gain more space that uninstalling packages in an existing installation? Or you are saying that I can't uninstall packages that are built on the flash image?

Piviul

packages that came with the image can be uninstalled, but won't actually free up any space, rather the opposite.
you need to create a new image without those packages.

Freeradius is large, it is not going to fit in 8 MB flash. Usually the RADIUS server is run on a large computer, though a late-model ARM router with 128 MB or more flash/ram could also work.

Many thanks frollic. Whats the right download, sysupgrade is correct?

for existing openwrt installs, yes.

What about to extend the root filesystem like: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/additional-software/extroot_configuration

that's what @ncompact suggested 12hrs ago.

Hi compact, that solve my problems.

Thanks to all

I would install freeradius on a server in the network and avoid installing it on the devices.
